Hot showers - 2 per day minimum - are the cornerstone of civilization as far as I'm concerned. A hot shower can change an attitude like magic!

We were at a hotel deep in Mexico a few years ago and their water supply stopped for about 24 hours. Guests were given buckets to scoop water from the swimming pool for toilet flushing, etc. I filled up 2 water bottles and took them into the shower. Squirted half to wet meself down, soaped up, then squirt-rinsed with the rest. Better than nothing.

Mr. Flipper - JWN would not be the same without your kindly presence. You are a peach!

Hey flipper I did not have time to read everyone comments but I did talk to you the other day. So glad you are back on the power grid.

When we first left Bethel the city we moved to had an ice Strom and everyone was with out power for days and some for weeks. The PO's family was without power for about 6 days. OMG that was now about 14 years ago, the last time I was around the PO's wife she when I was still going to the meetings a year ago she was still talking about it and how hard it was on her and etc. I was thinking and you keep saying the systems end is so close how are you going to handle that if you cannot handle being without power for a week and you are still talking about it 14 years latter.

Anyway for myself it was hard because my job got power back on and so I still had to go to work with cold showers and the rest that goes along with not having hot showers and stuff but everyone was in the same boat as me so it was what it was. We were living in an apartment at the time and we had the coolest older couple manging the place. So I just helped them with things like shoving snow and such. In a way it was kind of nice because most people just helped each other out.

On a side note none of the JW's helped anyone out that I heard of. It was each man for himself. I got no calls from any of the so called "friends." My husband was working the swing shift as it was the only job he could find when we came back from Bethel and so he was missing a lot of meetings but they still kept him on as an elder for some strange reason. It was the best time of our marriage really. Honestly I did not miss the power in someways as it drew our little community in the apartments closer.

The electricity went off for 6 hours again tonight - finally back on at 10:00 P.M. P.G. & E. sucks in their service up here. Our lines are old .

HADIT- Thanks ! Fortunately we were not cold in our home since I cut 3 cords of wood this summer for our woodstove which heats the entire house. You are right- losing electricity does make you more innovative in solutions in getting through it. And yes- we definitely have enjoyed hot showers.

HIGHLANDER- You are right- I don't have a generator, and yes - this doesn't happen very often up here. Good to hear San Bernardino mountain people plan ahead ! I might have to put a generator on my next lists of purchases.

HEAVEN- Thanks , appreciate it. It sounds like you've experienced living off electricity before a good deal. You are right- people can definitely survive just fine without it - however it's death dealing to kidney patients or others depending on life support systems from electricity if it goes out- very true. Thanks for the website to help people through outages .

SAYSWHO- I'm glad things got better for you. AND that you discovered the truth about the pretend " truth "

DESIGNS- Thanks. Everybody is fine. Appreciating hot showers more.

BIZZY BEE- Thanks for the kind words, appreciate it. I agree- hot showers are the quiet , clean, reflective times in our life when we totally give attention to ourselves like we deserve . I bet your experience in Mexico was definitely an eye opener ! LOL !

LIFE IS TOO SHORT- Thanks ! Good hearing from you. Yes, we were back on grid- then lost it for 6 hours again Saturday from 4:00 P.M. to 10:00P.M. Crazy. But it's back on now- hopefully to stay ! So it sounds like you went through some long term power outages also . It does draw people back closer together, neighbors that is- very true. We had our neighbor come over for woodstove heat and food on Tuesday night. I agree non-witness people take care of each other better than witnesses. Good points

    LOL @ Flipper.

Believe it or not, there are still some people down here who don't have electricity.

Far, far back in the sticks, we can't even get a cell phone signal. WiFi is totally out of the question!

I remember having to haul water and heat it before an open fire up until the year I graduated from high school - 1971.

    We made it.

It's good to have you back.

When disaster (physical or economic) strikes, the poorest people who are used to doing without stuff will do the best. The people who are used to killing their own chicken for a meal and cooking from scratch will fare much better than people like me that go to a restaurant or grocery store for everything and pop it in the microwave.

First of all glad everything turned out well. What you said made me think back to my childhood in the 1950's everybody i knew had one uninteresting bathroom a black & white tv no remotes party line telephones no ac and we thought everything was the way it should be. we recently toured a historic home built in the 1700's the lady told us how many people crammed into that small area and this was pre out house time time and I imagined a woman like me going out in the woods in the winter and than she showed us the one washing tub for everyone clothes and bodies and I guess they thought it was normal.

Today, I don't want to live w/o two bathrooms or any of the good stuff. We know that the future is uncertain and something could take it all away. Let's hope is not anytime soon.

    Hey Flipper!..

So you had to rough it..LOL!!..

I miss showers when that happens..I like my shower..

Good thing you had a wood stove..

If you put food in a roasting pot on top of the stove you can cook a variety of meals..

    I`ve done it many times..

You should get a generator too..Mine is ready for any power outages..

I can have lights watch TV,The fridge stays on..Ect..ect..
