Today's topic on Freeminds mind be of interest to those of you who are buying your first trees.

Many of you are celebrating the holidays for the first time. Some of you will be decorating your homes for the first time which means buying and decorating your first Christmas. This can be a daunting task especially if there is no one around for advice or you have never seen it done before. It can be fun with a few simple directions.

The first thing is to get a tree. The options are almost limitless. Real vs. artificial, type of tree; fullness, branches slanting down or up or almost horizontal, even the color can add to your choices. My best recommendations are to scan the internet first for images of decorated trees and find something you really like.

Tomorrow's column will be about How to Decorate a Christmas Tree (This will only be accessible starting tomorrow). Most articles on the internet talk about how to decorate it with style. But they don't provide the basics assuming most people already know them. So I put my tree up early and took a lot of pictures as I set it up and decorated it.

Hope the two articles are helpful to you.

I like the white trees. I was searching the internet and actually saw trees baby blue. That was too weird for me. I also saw pale pink and pale mauve trees. It's sort of hard to imagine what they would look like sitting in someone's living room though.

I figure whatever you get you will be using for a few years so you better be pretty sure you like it

darth- My first post JW tree was a small white one that had silver balls, pink lights, silver and pink ribbon for garland and a pink snowman topper.

It was gorgeous! Since my husband is still an active Witness, we waited until he went to spend a few days with his parents to put it up and took it down before he got home. It was so worth it, the next year we went with a larger green tree and put it up earlier... husband was NOT happy but the tree stayed.

He did blow us in to the Elders, but they haven't done anything because we hadn't been to meetings in a couple years and we let them know how much their lack of love affected us. One actually had tears in his eyes talking to us about our feelings about our treatment by the congregation. I hope he wakes up.

I will try and post a picture of the tree if I can find it.

Lady Lee- We went holiday crazy for a couple years and put the white tree up for every holiday. Red lights and ribbon with Victorians hearts for Valentines, purple lights, glitter eggs and pastel ribbons for Easter ect. We didn't miss any holiday , drove my poor husband batty. This year he still doesn't celebrate but has made a small wish list I think we're getting to him.

Important: If you are new, start early. That way, you will have time to fix the mistakes you will make. You will be able to fix a wimpy looking tree while there is still time, and make corrections if you don't like it. Yes, look online at videos at the basics--but practice is most important when you are new.

If you did it before becoming a witless, you might know the basics. However, if you were born in, you may not even know the first thing except that the lights plug into a wall outlet. Learn the safety rules around electricity, and if you have a tree big enough to need a ladder, learn how to use one safely. (If you own a window cleaner business or work for one, you probably already know ladder safety.) Better to watch these videos and practice (on a fake tree) in October than to tangle the lights on a tree when you need it quickly.
