  A RAPIST evaded justice for 25 years because Jehovah’s Witnesses did nothing when told about his child sex abuse, a court heard.

  Anthony Burns, aged 54, was confronted with his crimes against a young child in the 1980s but no action was taken by the religious organisation.

  Burns repeatedly abused a girl as young as nine years old, from 1977 until 1984 when she revealed what had been happening.

  Burns, of Back Road, Wisbech, in Cambridgeshire, denied four charges of indecent assault, attempted rape and rape but was convicted after a trial. The abuse took place in the 1970s and early 1980s in Eastbourne and Northamptonshire. He was jailed for 11 years and placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life.

  Judge Charles Wide QC said: “It is very unfortunate the Jehovah’s Witnesses community dealt with a complaint in 1984 in a wholly inappropriate way, seemingly more concerned with their own reputation than doing justice, but I acknowledge they were very different times.

  “I sincerely hope their processes have been changed radically since then. It is because of their involvement that these matters were not reported. You were challenged at the time by two witnesses and could have made a clean breast of it but you did not and during the trial, you had the gall to accuse them of lying about it.”

  sounds similar to my daughters abuser , this makes me so angry ! hope that judge checks out if they have changed their policys on dealing with child sex abuse !!!!

  Thanks Blondie. Nope nothing has changed as of 2010. Not in my hall at least on the west coast of the US. They say these men can be cured and call them a gentle giant in public talks, let them hold children, baby showers, go door to door with only some sister who does not have a clue of their past. The elders still flip out if the PUBLIC police and court records get out. The one sex offender in my hall his court records call him a sexual psychopath but they elders say he is cured and he has found at least four JW woman willing to marry him two that did and had small little girls just the age of the ones he raped and the elders love him to bits.

  Blows my mind how the men at Bethel allow this and yes I have sent the Brothers at Bethel all the court and police records and they do NOT CARE!

  I know they think their hands are legally bound in some of these cases- damned if they do and damned if they don't. But they are supposed to protect the children and let Jehovah protect the frigging organization. It's been crystal clear that Jehovah wasn't protecting the children. From what I have read, they comply with the law to the least extent that they have to, still not willing to stand by victims as they go forward to the police. They don't have to decide guilt w/o their precious two witnesses in those cases, but they can be supportive of victims and they don't. Instead, their very first issue is always "Who else knows about this?"

  They still have the victim facing the person they accuse if they have no further witnesses to the acts. No professionals would subject a child to such a traumatic event unless they prepped the child for court and had people standing by them for support. Even then, they try to avoid it and only do such a thing when it's necessary for the conviction.

  Pedophiles can be treated, but never cured. If the position of the WTBTS is otherwise, they are deluding themselves and endangering their children.

  The GB and needs to get it through their very hard heads that Rape, child molestation, child abuse, spousal abuse, etc are crimes, not sins. The elders are not police officers, they are supposed to be ministers. Crimes should be dealt with by the police.

  Viola I agree wholeheartedly.

  I would have more respect for them if they had zero tolerance for these things and reported allegations allowing the authorities to deal with them.

  In the organisation people are trusting because they are told the society has higher standards and take risks they would not dream of on the outside. It is sad that there is less protection for children in the congregation because of this false sense of security.

  Unfortunately, things haven't really changed for the Borg. The world has become more righteous and just but the Watchtower is still living in the early 20th century.
