I'm proud of davidl7's brother-in-law for bucking the rules and sneaking in the small Samsung recorder to record the sessions. I'm sad for him that he left a relatively benign and normal religion and joined a cult, though.

We're not onlookers of the WTS, most of us are former or current members. Many of us were MS, elders, bethelites and so forth. We know the organization and aren't fooled by your BS conversation.

So, the question is, "Why don't the elder's school allow tape recorders"

I thought about it. Here's what I figure is the answer.

Elders have an important job. They are responsible for the flock. The flock looks to them for answers. Sometimes, the situations are serious. Child abuse, pedophilia, wife abuse, divorce, decisions to stay married, mental disorders, depression, suicide, freedom to join another religion, shunning/disfellowshipping/breaking apart families, blood, loss of life, etc. Being an elder is a heavy responsibility. Elders have a DUTY to the flock. The carrying out of these duties have legal consequences on the elders.

The Watch Tower is a top-down church. They need the elders to be able to handle these situations the same. Hence, elder school helps to insure that problems are handled the same.

So, why not record this important information? The Watch Tower does not want to be held responsible for the elder's actions. By making the elders only take notes, the Society has the easy out, "The elder misunderstood." But, if there is a tape recording of the elder's school, the elder can say, "No, I didn't misunderstand. This is what I was told to do."

IN SHORT, THE REAL REASON THE ELDERS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO RECORD THESE MEETINGS is to protect the Watch Tower Society and to hand the elder out to dry if something terrible happens to a rank & file member.

Precisely, you totally hit the nail on the head. I called Bethel last June about a child molester in my hall and talked to a brother in the legal department and that is what he said in so many words.

He clearly told me the elders are independent agents. He said the "elders have clear direction and it is their responsibility to follow the direction and if they do not they Bethel is not responsible. This brother even told me he would hate to be some of the elders who have given bad advise and that they will have to answer to Jehovah. I told the brother I am clearly telling you that the elders are allowing child molesters to run free. He did not answer me, and just said the elders have clear direction on how to handle it.

So you are spot on. Bethel is washing their hands of the elders when a legal case come to light. If a child get raped or someone dies from suicide due to a faulty elder, Bethel will say we gave them the elders book it was their responsibility to do what it says. The notes they are taking will mean nothing.

I never thought of recording a KM school, because frankly, I could barely sit through it the first time. I definitely didn't want to have to possibly listen to it again.
