    Judges 15:15

"Then he found the jawbone of a recently killed donkey. He picked it up and killed 1,000 Philistines with it."

Did the Philistines just line up and waited for Samson to kill them? Didn't they defend themselves?

Did not the Philistines have swords? arrows? spears?

If they did, did the swords not cut Samson? Did the arrows and spears just bounce off of him?

Something is not right with this part of the story!

It was like the Matrix you see? He just dodged out of their way. Samson was the ONE...

Reminds me of the tall tales and campfire stories of Pecos Bill or Paul Bunyan.

Don't you remember the 1949 Cecil B. DeMille classic, VM44? Why, Samson had help from God, that's why his hair didn't get messed up. (That, plus great makeup for Victor Mature.) This is the scene. I think you will agree it is very realistic and believable. Why else would this masterpiece have won two academy awards (I mean, besides the fact that most of the Academy at the time were Jewish and the rest Protestants? I think they may have had a Roman Catholic member, too, but he wasn't allowed a vote.)

I hope you realise you made me use up one of my precious few newbie posts, Q ..... besides, its invulnerable, as in Superman, except for kryptonite. Kryptonite was the same as getting a haircut, I guess.

edit. I think Simon's playing around with the source code this weekend ...

Thanks Lion Cask, I couldn't change the "untitled topic" title of the other thread, so I started over and created this new thread.

(Shelby giggles): Victor Mature was one of my "boyfriends" when I was a very little girl. He was such a "hunk"... so... well, Samson-, Demetrius- and every other true gladiator-type like and all (no offense to OUR true Gladiator ). I was gonna marry him when I grew up.

Peace... and hide the scissors, Samson!!

SA, on her own, and glad someone remembers Mr. Mature...

The Samson saga is brimming with dynamic myth and heroic legend. The standard literary motifs of jewish legend were amply sprinkled with elements from solar and stock hero mythology. The Jawbone of an ass was likely inserted into the story as a psuedo-etiology of a namplace familiar to the author. The setting chosen, Ramath-Lehi, means "hill of the jawbone". This was repeated with the miraculous spring story. In this second case the standard literary formula is applied, "to this day" (Judges 15:19) revealing the clear intent for the element in the story is for legend building.
