Cancer Vaccine Developed -- And Ignored

The Food and Drug Administration has just approved a
vaccine that helps protect against anal cancer in men
and women by targeting the human papillomavirus (HPV).
About 90 percent of anal cancers are believed to be
caused by HPV, and the vaccination also helps prevent
cancer of the cervix, vagina, vulva, penis, and throat,
as well as the development of genital warts.

This cancer vaccine is a genuine medical breakthrough
-- yet few people have received the HPV vaccine. Despite
strong recommendations by the U.S. Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention, only about one in 10 young adult
American women have been vaccinated against HPV.

    Why?

According to a study published in the journal BMC Women's
Health, fewer than one-third of women between 19 and 26
who had not gotten the vaccine thought it was important,
and about as many had discussed it with their doctor.
Almost half were ambivalent about getting the HPV
    vaccine.

The study found that women had various reasons for not
getting the vaccine, including being in a monogamous
relationship (55 percent); concern that the vaccine is
unproven (35 percent), and concern over side effects
    (24 percent).

Cost is also a significant impediment; the two vaccines,
Gardasil and Cervarix, each cost about $120 per dose and
require three doses. Health insurance companies may or may
not cover the cost, but, doctors note, it’s a relatively
small price to pay compared to getting cancer.

This vaccine is now being given to girls throughout Europe. A good start.

The medical insurance people will lose BILLIONS if fewer people get these cancers and no longer need to buy the drugs.

As far as I am aware, there is no routine innoculation against TB free to youngsters. Cant have those commies caring for the young ones.

I wonder if its being ignored intensionally by the population or is it a matter of not knowing about these vaccinations altogether ?

It might very well be a case of health insurance companies being a bit dismissive in paying for these vaccinations due

to the amount of assumable costs.

Interesting when a vaccination has the capability to take away the appreciable value of already established pharmaceutical drugs

to fight these kinds of cancers.

Can it be denial by parents?

"My sweet innocent baby girl will never EVER have casual sex with a sexual predator with hundreds of contacts a year."

"My sweet innocent hunk of a son will never have sex with gay men."

The Victorians desexualised their kids by inventing a whole dress code for children at a time when the demand for child prostitutes was at an all time high. Are parents now doing a similar thing by ignoring this important development?

I recall hearing a few years ago some girls were having serious issues (including death) after taking the vaccine.

This CDC article mentions the issues but they don't seem to think it's a problem worth pulling the vaccine.

I wonder if parents today are also warning their children (teens) about oral sex? I read an article that showed that throat cancer is on the increase because teens aren't using protection when performing oral sex ..

They thought they found a great way to NOT get pregnant..

They never dreamed they could get cancer later from the virus..

As far as vaccines go, I too would tread lightly, I am remembering the wonder drugs like DES and Thalidomide..

Oddly enough during the govonor's campaign here in Texas the Democratic candidate used Perry's (R) wanting to require girls to get this vaccine as part of an attack ad.

We didn't ignore it when my daughter was offered it at school, we made an informed decision to opt out.
