When I first left the JW's some years ago, one of the most incredible observations I made was just how irrelevant the WT and JW's were to the larger public. When the conversation turned to my history (as it often did, because I desperately wanted to discuss it) the most comon reaction was of complete unawareness of the JW's, much less their doctrine, or complete surprise that I regarded them as destructive. To the later, the JW's were understood to be just another church like any other, a little weird perhaps but just one of the many churches in town. It was a huge step forward in my adjustment to the larger world to realize that they were right, it was just a church like so many others.

I am of the opinion that the greatest damage to the WT was when it outlasted it's sensational predictions and outgrew gigantic conventions and became an Adventist, Protestant church like dozens of others. The misleading PR campaigns to impress governments eventually shaped the new reality. The complete makeover of the Kingdom Halls and the image conscious emphasis upon having respectable cars and homes and "reasonable" incomes and insurance so as to project the impression of normalacy have been taken to heart and with each year the religion has evolved further from inflamatory, raging doomsayers toward unremarkable, unexceptional, unnoteworthy, irrelevant.

I agree that they're relatively irrelevant.

On the other hand, for 7 million adherents and their tens of millions of non-JW relatives and loved ones, they are a VERY relevant and destructive mind-control cult. We MUST do a better job educating the public about them and other cults like them.

I understand M.S, But being hurtful is hardly exceptional. I've had many a conversation with friends and associates suffering similar family damage or personal injury from other churches. Missouri or Wisconsin Synod Lutheren, Baptist, Pentecostal, local Assembly of God etc etc. they all breed elitism and sectarian bigotry. Most use some form of cohersive shunning and information control. So what I mean by irrelevant is not that the church doesn't damage lives it's that so do so many if not most churches.

Yes, very few people know much about the JWs apart from that they get bothered by them on weekend mornings every couple of years.

I've had some interesting conversations with friends about my life as a JW. The general public have just no idea what being a JW actually entails.

When I tell people about JW's and what really goes on, they are all very shocked and appalled. For 99.9% of people, the only thing they know about JW's is that they go door to door and they dont' celebrate holiday.

yes I agree about the elitism and sectarian bigotry. It was an eye opener to me too that people on the outside thought of Jehovahs wintesses as just another religion. But this made me relax at their normalcy and I stopped feeling like such a freak for having been a witness for so long. However I will always feel attentive to the changes I would like to see happen within the organisation, so I won't ignore them. Good thread peacefulpete - it helps to crystallize whats going on.

Trust me dude, this is just another step to seeing that the religion is even a marker after the fact. I have been out 15 years and still have to tell people, 'Look, I do not believe any of the crap and do not feel uncomfortable with me.' This is coming from a person who turned 100% pagan and does Witchcraft. Of course, it is easier to explain the Witness past, LOL!!! I love my life ... now it is real.

    Ahhhhh...... EX - CUSE me??????

Have you attended the latest Jehovah's Witness assembly, in which they spoke out strongly AGAINST getting a "higher"education???? That really doesn't sound like "emphasis upon having respectable cars and homes and "reasonable" incomes" to me....

Ever since Rutherford, the Watchtower Society has prided itself on being "different"... They are still marching to that bizarre tune, even to this day...

They still don't allow [some] blood transfusions...

They still don't want JWs serving in the military - in ANY way... They've allowed "alternative" service, lately, but I suspect that was only so the Watchtower Society could get into certain countries...

They still disfellowship, disfellowship, disfellowship, disfellowship, at the drop of a hat... In fact, the number of reasons to BE disfellowshiped has actually INCREASED in the past 20 - 30 years, not decreased...

They still don't want JWs going on to college - unless they're going to work as lawyers for Bethel...

They still forbid ALL celebrations - except for the "Lord's Evening Meal"... No birthdays, Christmas, Easter, Halloween, 4th of July, etc, etc...

They STILL behave like a 'niche' cult - a little nutty and very closed-system....

If they'd wanted to go "mainstream", they would have claimed that "Armageddon" came "invisibly", a LOOOOOOONG time ago - and would have gone on to the more sensible business of - well, making their publishing-company-disguised-as-a-religion more viable to the general public...

No I didn't attend a JW assembly lately, but I am pretty well aware of the developments in the religion and trust me it has shifted tremendously toward the center. My wife and I were in many respects relics of the past when I questioned the need for remodling all the KHs to update the color schemes and when I was pulled I the back room for driving an older car. My first KH was a 12x16 log cabin with an outhouse and we prided ourselves that it was not pretentious or showy like the other worldly churches. That was a bit of an extreme example of what KHs were like even then but today such a thing would be inconceivable. Years later we sold our possessions and literally moved to the third world to preach and lead a congreagtion for a number of years but the reaction of the American elders when we returned was one of contempt and distrust. I was, it seems , not taking exemplary care of my wife by not buying a house, having health insurance and driving a bigger car. I was truly taken by surprise by how quickly the shift had taken place. The higher education thing is an interesting topic on its own and has been hashed here many times. Ask a new person what they believe and then ask someone who has been in for 50 years. They will be worlds apart. Old fogies cling to the older paradigm but their voices are largely ignored and are being phased out.

But regardless their particular swings, the rest of the world currently perceives them as just some Protestant Adventist church like so many others.

How many times have I heard in the media or by word of mouth that JWs are vegetarians? I have heard that my whole life.
