The trouble with 'reading people' is that even when we're reading books, different people come away with a different message. Look at the 'holy books' for example...
I believe it's not so much the process of teaching or indoctrination that leads to JWs seeking out the 'poor in spirit' (and mind, and body) it's caused by the depressing nature of the preaching work itself. I believe JWs seem to focus exclusively on the desperate because those are the only people who will give them the time of day. The halls are filled with people who were captured in this way - the only time one is really susceptible to any vine that offers a way out of the quicksand. As a result the rank and file JW is likely to be a paranoid, schizoid, depressed or disturbed individual. This cult exacerbates these and other problems by exaggerating or manufacturing their 'real causes' in the guise of alleviating them, exchanging new things to be afraid of in place of the old. The JW knows that 'keeping the eyes on the prize' is paramount (a selfish lot because of that, really...) so allowing the desperate to see the prize should be enough to get them on the right path. Life is rather more complex than that... 'witness' the result. :/

as a jw I tended to evaluate persons from a mainly negative aspect.
( They watch R rated movies, and miss meetings ???? Well then, they are scum )
But since leaving I have developed a much more level headed view of people, sure there are many nutjobs out there, but I give everyone a chance first, then make up my mind as to who I think they are.
