In fact, the New Catholic Encyclopedia
says that gambling “is not considered sinful
except when the indulgence in it is inconsistent
with duty.” However, no Scriptural passages
are cited to support that conclusion.
How, then, should a Christian view this matter?
Does the Bible condone or condemn
    gambling?
It must be noted that the Holy Scriptures
do not directly mention gambling. This does
not mean, however, that we are left with no
    direction on the matter.

The article then goes on to make a very weak case involving the 'god of good luck' (There's also a god of the harvest you shouldn't pray too, does that mean farming is evil?)

It also uses the command that you shouldn't desire your fellowman's things to prove that you shouldn't gamble. Although I'm pretty sure that would include investing in stocks and bonds, doing ANY kind of business to get someones money or things. ETC.

Ignoring all those lousy arguments to prove their preconcieved notion that gambling is against the scriptures: They didn't mention gods good buddy Samson!

Judges 14:12-19 Then Samson said to them, "Let me pose a riddle to you. If you can correctly solve and explain it to me within the seven days of the feast, then I will give you thirty linen garments and thirty changes of clothing. 13 But if you cannot explain it to me, then you shall give me thirty linen garments and thirty changes of clothing."

One would think this account would be worth mentioning in an article about the bible's view on gambling. But instead the writers pretend that the bible is completely silent on the matter (but give their rules anyway I might add).

I also love the ending of this article:

Having considered the many scriptures related
to the subject of gambling, do you
perceive what God’s will is in the matter?

Even though they didn't site a single scripture that is 'related to the subject of gambling' they write a concluding paragraph pretending they had just made an amazing case proving conclusively what god wants.

I noticed the same thing when I first saw this article. I posted my thoughts on this thread:

I had not thought about that Samson story for many years - didn't witnesses say this was an exception to the rule because of theocratic warfare or some such crap? They also had some weak explanation for the seemingly mystic Uriimm and Thummim (dice?) of the high priests.

It has been said before, but their 1960s position on tobacco farming, selling tobacco products, and smoking is equally and completely off the reservation biblically speaking. That was even made into a DF offense.

Every argument they make against smoking could just as easily be applied to caffiene but they certainly do not do that - leaving it for the Mormons.

Using caffiene is dabbling in spiritism?

'cause that's the real reason smoking became a DFing offense. They just harp on health concerns to make it look more convincing...

I don't think so, obviously - but you could just as easily say it was spiritism as to say nicotine is spiritism. Both are mild drugs.

And, obviously, neither is mentioned in the bible directly OR indirectly.

I've forgotten most of my bible but isn't there something about sacrifices and the smoke making a pleasing odor to the lord?

Indirectly I'd say that justifies smoking pot
