Go on, be honest, how did you enjoy giving talks?

    Were you nervous?

    Glad when it was over?

    So-so?

It was a fantastic high being able to manipulate the minds of so many people, a real turn-on, you always performed brilliantly and were the darling of the congregation afterwards?

Betcha can't guess which group I fall into!

It had a good side and a bad side. The first few talks I gave I was really nervous and stuff, then I grew a little bit more confident. It was so weird to look at the congregation from that direction that it freaked me out!

    But I managed.

    I gave pretty excellent talks.

I was the most nervous about writing them. I would fret over them unnecessarily. 'Should I say this or that...'

But as long as I had at least some crude outline on paper, it came out fine. Especially after I had a lot of practice giving last-minute subs.

I don't know why I did so well, as in my everyday speech I am not nearly so polished.

Maybe I had the holy ghost.

Before I start, I would like all of you to know that I have something here for every disfunction imaginable.

However, first, those of you that are not in good standing please go and sit in the back. Others, please come forward.

Righto, time to 'fess up now.

Last week, I had to stand before the WSM town council and explain why I was opposed to the granting of a sex shop licence to one of my neighbours. OK, OK, I'm not a prude, but can you imagine the effect that a sex-shop would have on the re-sale value of my home?

To those of you who watched Dellboy made bankrupt in court in "Only Fools and Horses", this was THAT court as used in the Xmas screening where I had to protest my objections.

Anyway, my MS training was still there, after 30 seconds I threw away my notes and addressed the court extemperaneously. Good word, eh?

I won the case, the only time ever that my JW upbringing was of some use.

    I can relate Englishman.

As a male who was a "brother" that gave #2 and #4 talks very frequently, at the very least it did teach you to become more competent in public speaking.

While everything else about being a JW is bullsh1t, you can find the good in all things bad if you look hard enough.

Door to door field service enhances your ability to muster courage to speak to complete strangers, and to even debate with someone. I had to rationalize this in my last couple years as a JW before I developed the all around knowledge to walk away.

So if ANYTHING good came from being a JW and successfully getting out. It is being a better public speaker, more courageous in talking to strangers, and to be very skeptical in blindly believing what other people say, it makes you a stronger person.

The true Kingdom of God is located in your heart, not an organization of hypocrites.

As a dub I was always terrified when speaking, not only having notes written out word for word but also notes in pen written all over my hands. That was years ago.
Nowadays I will be first to leap up and speak before any audience and 12 months ago delivered a stirring off the cuff funeral oratory that reduced a mass of grown men to alternating tears and laughter .
    Thank you Dub training school!

    Glad you won Eman !

I always hated talks BTW ... I often thought about leaving the truth, anything to save turning up on the Execution, I mean Thursday. People said I did them good and they liked them (I always put a lot of effort into preparing them and tried to make them interesting) but I would not choose to do it. The last thing I would do is put my kids through such torture!

Funny though, it is one of those useful skills isn't it?

WOW what a bad memory! I can remember looking down to where my Dad was sitting(Presiding Overseer)so nervous I was because he always came down on my reading and pronunciation.I never got the best marks, always room for improvment and I think he was making the check marks too!
