My parents did the best with what they had. While, it wasn't "the best", is there "a best"? Besides what Hollywood or the TV shows as "best" families - there are thousands of layers on everyone's family onion. Even Oprah's family has layers...
Anyway, your daughters....well, Armegheddon is one of her realities. You can try to argue with her all day long that it's an illusion. But, she will see it as a pending reality. For some reason, she needs to believe it's reality. Sort of like an optical illusion. She'll see the other side when her mind is ready to see it your way. Until then, she'll just think your viewpoint is batty. Depending on how much she needs to believe her reality, you may see her get more combatitive whenever you invite her to see your viewpoint. Pretty soon, you've got to realize that she is arguing with herself....trying to hold up her illusion.
