I remember spending 2 hours driving to return visits to find not one person home. Waste of gas, wear and tear on the vehicle, and waster of time.

If any other organization counted its success by the amount of time the workers put in, rather than actual hard results achieved - It would be broke in a month.
Can you imagine an insurance salesman who gets his targets by spending all the hours knocking on empty houses and not really trying with the folk he does meet?

teel- I agree! For many years I was spending 20-60 hrs each month in FS and it's just as you describe. Very little time was actually spent discussing or teaching the bible to people.

darth frosty- but if you lied about your fs report what would be the point in going out in service? I believed Jehovah wanted me to go and thats why I did. If I lied about my time he would know. How would my FS be pleasing to Jehovah or acceptable to him if I lied? If anyone lied or lies about their fs times why bother going at all? Jehovah would not accept your service- you'd be fooling yourself and wasting your time altogether- if you believed in the truth that is. Or-
unless you were going out in fs just to hang out with witness friends!
But yes, all that time I spent in FS was just a tremendous waste of my time after all. What a waste.

In the old days (the 50's) we used to do what I would consider the tough territories in order to get our hours -- street work walking, standing on street corners, calling on business managers. I don't ever recall have break times until the 70's. Now, it's telephone calls -- a group sitting at a table with one telephone between them, mall witnessing -- a group sitting and waiting, internet witnesses in certain forums. All seeming to make it easier and less effective. Len.

And what about the time wasted going back and forth to and from calls? I remember counting my one hour of field circus a couple of times when we drove across town, hit every red light and traffic problems, wasted 15 minutes hunting for the house, and the person was not home. Then we went back, and that was my whole month's field circus. For sure, not gold or silver quality hours.

After reading this, I couldn't help but wonder what field service (door to door) is like now. I wonder if people still even open their doors?
There is no way, with me living alone at my age, that I would open the door to strangers at my doorstep.
I wonder if it is hard to find anyone that does open their doors?

Any newbies here that have been in service recently?

Thank the great Lord Jehober I don't have to go in field service anymore.
