What had seemed an uncharacteristically long period of clement weather for the generally chaotic region surrounding Mount Vaca was the lull before the storm.
Henri knew what lay ahead on the arduous ascent as he set his jaw in a grim line of steely determination. Having trudged for hours in what less sturdy souls would have deemed endless circles upon entwining circles, the hardy explorer moved onward and upward with hearty purpose.
Pain, intolerable pain, gripped Henri Bonheur from the soles of frostbitten feet to the nape of his covered but vulnerably tender neck. Ever a striver, never a mere watcher or wonderer, the young fool, the lovable, ardent young fool, inched his way in a manner both dragging and bedraggled. At last ... at last ... at the roof of the world! Pelted by water in its most dangerous and hardened form, Henri le Hero cared not over his broken body ... his spirit soared toward heaven, renewed, never broken....
Marie Best looked down from her second-story bedroom window at the little courtyard of the adjoining property. There was old, lovable Henri, the teller of tales, walking his circular gravel walk. Hours, hours of repetitive but somehow stimulating shuffling. The old codger was now standing upon the little rock outcropping in the center of the garden, looking skyward jubilantly, not fazed in the least by the pelting rain.

You, mon cher, must realize that those who tear at you cannot reach and destroy the inner beauty that illuminates your soul.
It is so evident to those who are able to see beyond their noses and biases that you are unique in all the world. So what if you are different from the rest of your fellow men in outward appearance? A cruel twist of fate has, as ever, without explanation, without partiality, bestowed upon you an aspect of uncommon singularity. Surely those second looks of utter disbelief by passersby must afflict you terribly. However, my cherished friend since youth, have I not stood by you, continuously infusing into your tired mind that a distorted and wracked frame is in no fashion the complete measure of a man?
Surely you realize how many, many of our open-hearted citizenry adore you for the compassionate, generous man that you are. Notwithstanding, of course, those few miscreants who make an excessive display of incredulity over your special gifts. What else would you have me to call them? You have transcended the mediocrity of pedestrian society by elevating yourself to the level of benefactor to the poor in spirit through your truest of humility and service to mankind.
Do not allow yourself to slip into self pity over a thing so trivial as an arresting physiognomy that you, on the whole, have not permitted to stand in the way of your beneficent acts. You are a child of the Universe and will, in perpetuity, grace all animate creation by the ardor of your expansive, nurturing goodness.
You, John Merrick, are beautiful.
