Some elders are genuinely motivated by a desire to serve God and others.

For others, the motives are less noble:

    1. Power trip

    2. Prestige trip

    3. A way of guaranteeing that they have "proved worthy" when Armageddon arrives by devoting hours and hours to serving the FDS organization.

undercover - you're right about all of the politics. That's technically all it really is. You can call it "being zealous", "reaching out", "advancing in the Truth", whatever, but at the end of the day, it's borderline simony and politics.

palmtree - there's always the elderette position, haha.

james woods - haha now THAT'S gangsta!

leavingwt - I meant that I find it "odd" in a purely cynical, critical form of analysis.

onemore - "give it up" is sound, sound advice.

imstuckin - great point, this is one of the reasons that prevent me from accepting any further "appointments". I don't want to be in a position where I have to judge anyone. Maybe I'm wrong, but the last time I checked, the Bible says that forgiveness and salvation comes through JESUS, not some local guys in suits.

nolongerwaiting - this is so true. it has been stated in numerous other places in this forum that many of these guys don't have alot else going for them, but at night they get to put on a suit and interrogate 17 year old girls about what happened in the backseat of a car, and other numerous things that they have no business asking.

Thank you all for your comments. I hope all you members of this board realize what a help it is to one's own sanity to be able to voice objections without being stood before a Salem-witch trial.

Indeed. This forum and others provide a valuable outlet for such things. You're not alone.

I'm having difficulty seeing proof of God's Spirit at work here.

That's because God's spirit does not work withing an anti-Christ business.

I worked this out this way. It obviously doesn't work because men have been appointed to office whilst doing things they should be DF for (under cult rules). Also, as an ELder I sat on JC's where when 'Holy spirit' had decided the outcome of the star chamber hearing the poor victim is given 7 days to appeal. & days...WTF??????? God's infallible judgement is give 7 days in case he changes his mind.

It's a business and all desicions are done like they would be in a business!!

Ugh. Tell me about it! One elder I worked with in service was telling me about his wife. Negative things. About how she makes him so angry sometimes, etc. I thought it ironic how there was a WT a few wks ago discussing how NOT to talk about your wife in that way. AND he was the brother doing the WT. But their imperfect so...
