On eof my points was that years ago my Mother in law (JW) was told by her Elders that it was OK to associate with me..now they discourage it..(putting it lightly)..another one of their changes..

I have to say though that the JW and I that recently had it out so to speak over the JW's (on facebook)is still talking with me even tho she knows my view of the witnesses and that I am disassociated..one of the few that thinks for herself..

I think that is why I alway liked that family out of many.

I would be very interested to see if there is a co-relation between cult members and certain mental disorders that has been formally documented. Does anyone know if any recent studies have been done on this? I think we've all seen first-hand with our family and any friends who are JWs that there are issues, at least with depression if not other more serious ones like suicide. But some numbers and a formalized study or set of studies would be interesting if not needed.

I found this on Wikisource: http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/The_Effects_of_Religious_Cults_on_the_Health_and_Welfare_of_Their_Converts

They have already linked lack of education specifically a lack of post secondary-school education as a factor in developing dementia. Other factors are substance abuse, including drinking and smoking as well as drug abuse, lack of healthy dietary and exercise habits, and long term depression.

While I am now dealing with various different health agencies regarding my Dad, I make a point to inform them that he is a JW and what that means, including the demands placed on them and the negative affects this has when they can no longer perform.

I feel legislation is needed in order to deal with the destructive nature of cults.

The WTS. has become more vigilant on who their devoted members are to associate with.

In times past it was any non-JW, the insinuation that JWS should only associate with other JWS has been a long running

laid down rule. It appears they have realized that family members have a strong involving impression on to people particularly

in cases of socialized religious beliefs, so now they are discouraging socializing with direct family members who left the organization

all together, whether they are good wholesome living people are not.

I'm not surprised on this at all since there is so much bad things said about this dangerous maligning cult on the inter-net and elsewhere

these days, something the WTS. never had to be confronted with in the past.

Building walls higher around their members will eventually force more people say enough I'm getting out.

"When our own thoughts are forbidden, when our questions are not allowed and our doubts are punished, when contacts and friendships outside of the organization are censored,we are being abused for an end that never justifies the means.

When our heart aches knowing we have made friendships and secret attachments that will be forever forbidden if we leave, we are in danger.

When we consider staying in a group because we cannot bear the loss, disappointment and sorrow our leaving will cause for ourselves and those we have come to love, we are in a cult"

Shortly after I left the JW's, I left that quote lying on a table in full view where any visitor may have seen it, my wife said to me :

"You should not leave that quote about Jehovh's Witnesses lying around, your family or anybody may see it"

What she had failed to notice was, in small print at the bottom of the page it was correctly attributed to :

    Deborah Layton, Jonestown survivor.

    Says it all really.
