Personally I would start with modern financial records first. Then you are talking millions instead of thousands. Should be easier to find, too.

I like the know the registrations of the autos Rutherford owned. Did he still own Cadillacs after the 1930's? I wonder there are records at the DMV's in California and New York on the make and model of those cars?
