I am currently going to school for Criminal Justice with a administration in Human Services...and boy oh boy! You think you know it all, you been to college before and this teacher can't tell you nothing that you dont already know. Man, was I wrong (smh). First of all, we only meet one night a week, and the class is for 4 hours. So most of it depends on how you do at home. A lot of tedious reading, etc. And not the kind of stuff that people like to read about: very technical terms, formulas, etc. You have to make sure you read throughly, and I mean EVERYTHING! If you miss something, the class moves at a very very fast pace, and if you missed something you missed it. This instructor actually has given us a lot of lead way on our assignments. We are in week three, and I just took my midterm exam (and we are going into week four) and the midterm was not submitted correctly. I just retook it, and I am PRAYING that she will except it. I go a B- on the test. She's also letting me resubmit my week 2 assignment thank God. I lost a lot of points on the assignment. She already told us that she cannont except late homework or my final exam during the last week of class, the last day being Feb 28th. The college actually has a great ecampus website, you just to make sure you read everything and that you actually have time for your classes. So, basically, If your too busy to go to this college, dont go!

I know there are a lot of ex-bethelites on here, was going to bethel very fast pace like this? Ex: if you missed something, you missed it, and that was it!

It sounds terrible. I was fortunate to go the old-fashioned way. Scientific studies show you can only absorb so much at a time. I passed the NY bar exam yet i'm having trouble with a fast paced powerpoint class. I majored in humanities and law school involved reading cases that always have a story. This is more rote in nature. I fade after 1 and half hours. I need to see a tutor for the first time in my life.

It strikes me that the school may not be interested in good teaching as much as making a profit. What kind of prof teaches this way? Maybe I've just been away from a class room. I've taken continuing legal education courses but there are no exams.

I miss the collegiate environment. My only living responsibility was a dorm room. I did not cook or do dishes. Clothing maintenance was minimal. There were fewer distractions. I lived on campus and the library was packed. The common suffering was good for me. When I felt like going home, I could see others staying and studying. I knew I was competing against them.

    Maybe I'm just old.

At some time, I plan on completing my degree in History; I'm shaking in my boots, Joliette.

I was good in school, but that was a long time ago.

These kids nowadays are scary! I would hate to be made to look the doddering fool.

    Joliette,

I am doing the same thing. I am working on my bachelor degree in engineering. I can't answer the question about Bethel, but I wanted to say GOOD FOR YOU!!!

I was born in and am currently 38 years old. How much easier would it have been if we were encouraged to go to college when we were young with less responsibilities and more time to devote to our learning.

My twin brother went back as an adult and is now a practicing attorney. It's sad that so many fine young intelligent JW's willl be relegated to scrubbing toilets, cleaning carpets, or working night shift while they pioneer when they should be getting an education.

Bethel and college don't compare. I have never been to Bethel, however, I have been to college. At a university and later, as an adult while working. College/university is about learning something to help you into a career. It is a place to go and start to grow into an adult. It is a place to learn how to make decisions on your own, without your Mom and Dad. It is a place to drink beer and eat pizza-responsibily. It is a place to make new, lifelong friends. It is a place to find new loves. But mainly it is a place to learn.

Bethel is a cult training camp.

As BOTR noted, it sounds like this could be a for profit school and not an actual accredited uni. Do you know?

Also, as she noted, trying to ingest that much information so quickly may not be the best route to learning for you.

A key thing you said was "A lot of tedious reading, etc. And not the kind of stuff that people like to read about: very technical terms, formulas, etc. You have to make sure you read throughly, and I mean EVERYTHING!".

Those technical terms and formulas are the keys to your sucess. Your learning what will be a lifelong career should not be tedious. It should be exciting and interesting. If it is not why are you doing it?

    Good luck!

LOL @ Bethel being cult training boot camp...I couldnt agree more.

I go to the University of Phoenix, and so far, I do like it, but its very challenging. I have to make sure that I read my work and concentrate and just do it. Its the matter of getting it done right away, and when you have an assigment do-just to do it, and make sure its done, and to make sure its done ahead of time. And as far as I know, yes, it is a for profit school.

Been there; done that as a single mom of 2 kids. Yes, it will kick your butt. I've taken a lot of excellerated courses that scrambled my brains, but I pulled it off.

Just have to do exactly what you are already doing, because that is exactly what I had to do and got my degree.

It is fully accredited, I'm sure.

It's just a new style of teaching.

    It's not for everyone, though.

And, my hair did grow back after pulling it all out for years.

    You can do it!
