There's no gossip like a JW

I recently admitted to a JW back in Wisconsin that we no longer go to meetings. I told her that we have not disassociated but we do not think of ourselves as JWs anymore. I had been close friends with this person since 1974.
Now the phone calls are coming. I think all of SE Wisconsin knows about it and of course things got twisted. I think she set some sort of record for how fast she spread that gossip. I have yet to see a JW who will not stab their best friend in the back when the opportunity presents itself. It reminds me of how in Germany people turned in their best friends to the Nazis just because they were Jews and not a pang of conscience. This woman has caused so much damage in her own family with her shunning nonsense, now she has tried to get my daughter-in-law's mother to shun her just for not going to meetings. I am so damn glad to be out of that cult. I can't believe so many people can be such idiots. They should all be slapped upside the head!

    Target,

Sounds like "you're the statue" this time. Your experience rings true.

Gossip is listed as sinful in WT publications, but is never punished. It is a means of putting others down and building up your power base. It seems to be a common practice among elders and their wives. Also among pioneers (so much time to pass out in the boring field ministry, gotta spice it up with some gossip).

Yeah the elders will come after you for more interesting sins, but gossip or slander -- doesn't seem to be worth the trouble. Maybe it's too hard to track down? Or maybe they don't want to prosecute it since it (gossip and put-downs) is a tool they themselves use?

Yes, it's rough-and-tumble inside the organization. Everyone eventually gets to be the 'target' of gossip. Even more so when you leave. You get the privilege of being the subject of all kinds of idle speculation! Can you feel the love??

Well it isn't surprising, considering they have zero to do besides go to meetings and try to make new converts.

I remember going to a friends house (I was in my early teens) regularly for dinner. Her dad was an elder and they would (as a family) discuss judicial committee matters at the table. These were unannounced matters. He didn't use names - but it was completely obvious who he was speaking about.

While my reasons for leaving the borg are varied, for my wife it came down to only one reason. The gossip. She couldn't handle it any longer.

Actually I'm pretty comfortable with it. You've proven yourself to be untruthful on more than one occasion. Just because you've offered "an apology and a clarification" doesn't mean that people are going to immediately accept what you say as factual now. You know the saying... Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. I, for one, am not about to allow you the privilege of my trust again.

    What a dumb ass!
Let me adjust the mirror so you can see yourself clearly. You're the grown-up man masquerading as a 17 year old girl.

How do you feel about this, "SexyTeen"/YoYoMaMa:

You are from your father the Devil, and you wish to do the desires of your father. That one was a manslayer when he began, and he did not stand fast in the truth because truth is not in him. When he speaks the lie, he speaks according to his own disposition because he is a liar and the father of the lie. - John 8:44
Does it make YOU feel good to know that every time you LIED here, that you were giving an act of worship to the Devil?

    Love, Scully
