It also depends on individuals and their communities. I know of one Amish guy that was excommunicated, and his family still socialized with him. They would do everything but EAT with him, taking that part of the scripture more literally than the rest I suppose. It used to make us laugh. He'd help them repair things and work with them, but he had to eat alone.

Of course, in the WTS communities it also depends on the local elders as to how this is applied. But it is important to read and listen to the comments of ex-amish people. That show will be on again March 19, check the National geo channel.

thanks blondie,,the Amish are intriguing. It is amazing how most/many Amish to go out and live wildly for a while but most return to the Amish way of life. I have read that suicide among Amish was very high. My husband's daughter, a nurse, said that the Amish don't believe in birth control but she said many have their birth control pills hiding in the pantry.
