The OT is like a darkened room. It's only when you bring the light of the NT to it that you are able to see it clearly. It's a large room with many items. As your understanding of the NT grows, you begin to see the outlines of the objects in the room. This grows until you can see the items clearly.

Also, while we're illustrating things, I'd like to add you can make continuous progress understanding the OT by using a method known as "tacking". That's where you flip back and forth between violent passages of the OT and peaceful passages of the NT until you somehow justify them both as being peaceful by just ignoring the violence. So while you're going side to side, you're also moving forward in an this vast.. ocean... of baloney. Or something like that.

Geez, I'm being an ass today and can't stop.

If you look at the OT from a Jewish or Atheist perspective ONLY, without the light of Christ, you will be confused.
Paul referred to looking at the OT without the understanding of Christ as looking through a glass darkly. (1Cor 13:12)

Brother Dan, I quit believing in Christ as a savior long ago because I do not believe in original sin. Neither do the rest of the Jews since we interpret Genesis symbolically. Paul started another branch of Judaism that later became known as Christianity. You have your book and we have ours. The two are not very compatable.

I'd like to know why anyone would consider any of the Psalms to be prophetic in nature. They were poems, songs, and prayers. Do any of them present themselves as prophecies?

That "tacking" analogy works as well for ex-JWs as it does for the Borg.

It only makes practical sense that God would have some purpose and intervene on behalf of planet earth. It was after the original Bible cannon was sealed that the earth was recognized as a spherical planet and was later named earth.

Let anger alone and leave rage; Do not show yourself heated up only to do evil. For evildoers themselves will be cut off, But those hoping in Jehovah are the ones that will possess the earth.

And just a little while longer, and the wicked one will be no more; And you will certainly give attention to his place, and he will not be. But the meek ones themselves will possess the earth, And they will indeed find their exquisite delight in the abundance of peace. Psalm 37:8-11, New World Translation

Stop being angry! Turn from your rage! Do not lose your temper—it only leads to harm. For the wicked will be destroyed, but those who trust in the Lord will possess the land.

Soon the wicked will disappear. Though you look for them, they will be gone. The lowly will possess the land and will live in peace and prosperity. Psalm 37:8-11, New Living Translation

I would say the Nation of Israel is still blessed. It's only been 5000 years of people attempting to annihilate us and they havent been able to do it. We are still here. Inventions by our scientists and the knowledge of our doctors have bettered and blessed mankind.

The premise behind every Jewish celebration: "They tried to kill us, they didn't, let's eat!"

Edited to add: I do not mean to imply by my post that Jews are spiritually superior to Christians. Nor do I appreciate implications that Christians are spiritually superior to Jews.

    MadSweeney,

It's funny that you ask why anyone would think the Psalms were prophetic in nature, because there were over a hundred Psalms that were alleged to be Messianic prophecies... compiled neatly in an impressive chart in the back of the All Scripture Inspired book. You know, like he would never have his bones broken, or that they would cast lots over his garment, etc. That was probably the main thing that had me sold on the Bible being "inspired", and I had a hard time letting go of it. But of course, it all came into focus when I learned how the New Testament was deliberately compiled to make it appear as if Jesus fulfilled all those prophecies.

Psalms has a good handful of prophetic descriptions of Messiah in these chapters, for starters:

    Psalms 2

    Psalms 8

    Psalms 16

    Psalms 22

    Psalms 40

    Psalms 45

    Psalms 68

    Psalms 69

    Psalms 72

    Psalms 89

    Psalms 110

    Psalms 118

    Psalms 132

Would you expand on this further? Maybe a link. Thanks.
