Changes are made that are optimal for survival and propagation of the species ......
but if we survived on this planet long enough would we eventually resemble something like our imagined aliens - the "greys"?
Case in point, people living in Detroit.

"Personally, I'm not convinced that the human race originated on Earth...
Think it through ---The surface acceleration of Terra is clearly too great for the human structure; it is known to result in flat feet and hernias and heart trouble. The incident solar raidation on Terra will knock down dead an unprotected human in an amazingly short time --and do you know of any other organism which has to be artificially protected from what is alleged to be its own natural environment in order to stay alive?" (R.A. Heinlein's brand of humor)
Shack is your post more for me or more for the general populace?
Just addressing the questions/thoughts in your OP and follow-ups....so both in a way.
Also should be noted that natural selection doesn't have foresight. It doesn't work in a way to make all species their "ultimate form". Changes are made that are optimal for survival and propagation of the species.
Huh? Given an infinite amount of time natural selection would indeed evolve to an "ultimate form" because the "survival phase" will eventually end... everything has an end. Eventually a species (maybe not us) will make it past the survival stage. Think about how evolution will spike once a species has no real threat of annihilation?
Your description of Evolution is as cold as ice.

TD that is an interesting quote and very pertinent.

I don't think that humans have "arrived to and end point" so I am happy to know that I have avoided a "common misconception."

Shouldn't the eye be compatible with the sun?
The eye might not be compatible with the sun, but humans as a whole are.
That reflex you have to look away from the sun is an evolved trait which prevents you from injuring yourself.
Just like humans aren't compatible with fire or stabbing themselves, so they evolved the ability to feel pain.
Once you have the reflex to prevent yourself from going blind, there is really no benefit to evolving the ability to stare at the sun without injuring yourself.
That reflex you have to look away from the sun is an evolved trait which prevents you from injuring yourself.
Maybe the reflex is, but why does it hurt us in the first place?
