Has your house been inspected yet, Murray?
I missed out on your first quake by a few days. At the moment I'm happy to be up here near our super-volcano so I won't be planning too many SI holidays for a while.
It was nice to hear that the Cathedral was empty. I bet the minister was chuffed.
Some distant family of ours were in their usual bus at their usual time. May they RIP

Nice to hear from you guys stateside and Canada . . . I guess most of you long-term west coasters have at least some idea how freaky living like this can get . . . but this beats handsdown any thing I could imagine . . . and I did a science degree in Earth Sciences 30-odd years ago!
Fact is we've been living with aftershocks for over 6 months now . . . since the 7.1 on Sept 4 2010 . . . some of those were big enough to knock you out of bed . . . but believe it or not we got used to them somewhat (after about 4,500 of them)
But the latest quake ("aftershock" . . . dunno . . . who cares what you call it) . . . a 6.3 on Feb 22 2011 things have taken another turn . .
As I mentioned earlier it's because the rupture is so damn close and so damn shallow . . . the "proximity" factor makes it all really sinister . . . each decent shock is preceded by a REALLY LOUD BOOM . . . it really is a frightening noise . . . then as the noise dies away there is an eerie silence before the seismic wave fair slams into the house . . . the swaying motion kicks in for 20-30 secs (time that on ya watch) . . . and we all breathe again . . . the volume is a warning however as to what action to take . . . but the continuity just wears away at ya.
I guess reports flowing out of here tend to report it as an "event" . . . if your living here though it's just one big continuous nightmare . . . can't sleep, can't eat . . . and when the hell is this going to end?
New rupture in the water mains in our street today . . . like a geyser
jb - Ohio . . . we took the lamp fittings pictures etc down a while ago . . . nothing loose above your head
I hope I don't sound too much like I'm soliciting sympathy . . . because a small part of me is totally fascinated by it all.
Blacksheep . . . condolences my friend . . . that's the hardest part . . . it was announced officially about 5 mins ago . . . Dr Dominic Bell . . our family Dr lost his life in CTV building . . . a most beautiful human being . . . so bloody sad . . . now I'm weeping.
Bright note? . . . I'm off to NI tomorrow for a break . . .
Luvonyall

we live in a somewhat stable society..
even when the tide rolls out for the incoming tsunami, we're so settled, so falsly secure that we watch.
until that tide comes back in a blink and mows us down.
let go of that false sense of security, its FALSE.
if your house is cracking, forget what everyone else says.
if it walks like a duck and if it sounds like a duck... then fuckin DUCK
move home.
who wants to buy your home?
put it on the market.

as an ex gambler... i wouldnt bet on that hand.
i wouldnt even check.
Closely monitoring things TheJigsUp . . . a big noise get's us outside in under 3 secs . . . like you say, it's falling buildings that actually kill ya.
Thanks for all your concern and support . . . it just aint something you like to be doing alone.
dont worry, every choice is alone.
and yeh i sincerely wish you the best.
