Friend of mine out west told me his spouse has been having trouble staying asleep with ambien and now she has been prescribed Temazepam which they said would make her sleep better and longer. Has anyone out here had those and what is the difference, and do you knjow if the Temazepam really works or not?

I love ambien. I take half a tab when I need it and its never failed me.
One time it got mixed up with the other meds and my bf accidentally took an ambien in the morning right before going to work...and he had a big presentation to do. Oh that was not good! He started hallucinating during the meeting.

Band on the Run
I was prescribed Ambien when it was first released on the market. The doctor told me to get ready for bed asap. I thought it was like a benzodiazpene. My mom was staying with me, Thank God. I became agitated. Something not very important was vitally important. My mom said I was talking and talking...she caught me as I went down hard. When I woke up, I was surrounded by a sea of chairs and other barriers. I had no memory.
I never lingered again. It is very individual response. A sleep med's half life is important to me. If my mom were not there, I would have hit my head. A drug that elicits behavior that is very atypical scares me.
I've found with medication it helps to see a psychiatrist, psychopharmoclogist, or sleep specialist. These are very potent drugs with very scary side effects. Internists and gps are the last person to see. I saw the world's leading psychopharmacologist for years. Adventures. I do get side effects very easily.

That stuff is crazy. I've struggled with sleep for a long time, even as a child. As I've gotton older, its become worse. I can't stop thinking about things. Constantly agitated, mind racing, and waking up from the stupor of this religion only contributed to my anxiety and insomnia. I can't speak for all men, but we're probably more notorious than women when it comes to seeing a physician. My doc was concerned about my blood pressure and anxiety, and possibly mild depression. So she put me on Paroxetine which helped tremendously on the anxiety end of things. Then she wanted to really focus on sleep. So she put me on Alprazolam(Xanax) which helped a little, but it still didn't knock me out like I wanted. Plus I'm kinda leary of benzos. So she tried Zolpidem(Ambien), and at first it seemed to work, but it still didn't do much. So I figured I'd give it a helping hand with a little Svedka. The rest is history, or at least Google Cache history along with some assistance from the Mods. I apologize for what I posted as it was completely inappropriate and dispicable. I wonder occasionally if what I posted is a reflection of whats really in my wicked heart? I ain't never been any good. Who knows, but that stuff is crazy with alcohol. I was waking up in the bathroom like how the heck did I get here?
One morning getting ready for the meeting, I went into the bathroom to brush my teeth and get a shower. I looked in the mirror, and my white tee was covered in blood stains. I'm wiggin out at that point, but for whatever reason I felt the need to smell the blood. So I did, and it smelled like buffalo sauce. So I ran into the kitched to see the garbage can, and there was a styrofoam container with the remains of chicken wings. I ran to where my Dockers were from the night before to check the pockets, and sure enough there was a reciept from the pizza shop down the street. The kitchen was clean, no dishes or anything. I'm thinking in my Ambien w/Becks stupor, I cleaned up with my white tee shirt. Crazy stuff. I've never touched that stuff since. I didn't remember a thing from the night before. The evidence didn't lie, same with the threads I posted here. The only bad thing is I've gone back to another poison. I sometimes go to CVS, or Walgreens, and get a bottle of Diphenhydramine(Sominex/Benadryl) 50mg capsules, and I'll take a handful of them. It does the trick, but my liver is probably looking like Papa Smurf as the capsules are blue. It leaves my mouth dryer than your average crack or methhead. But it does the trick, I think more affective than benzos or sedatives like Ambien/Lunesta.

I think different people have different reactions to different drugs.
I have used both Ambien and Temazepam. I much prefer Temazepam (Brand name: Restoril. It's a cousin to diazepam which is generic valium.)
Ambien sends me into a deep sleep with a little short-term memory loss. Too strong for my comfort level.
For me, Temazepam (Restoril) gently lets my mind rest - almost like someone just gently stroking my temples. If something happens in the middle of the night - I *do* wake up and can function. It also clears cleanly so I don't feel groggy in the morning. For me, it does not 'keep me down'. For me, it works for about 4 hours. If I am in good room with no interuptions, once I am asleep, I can stay asleep.
So I guess my experience between the two drugs is different than what has been suggested to your wife. But again, everyone is different and may have different responses.
Of the two, my preference - when I occaisionally need something to help me sleep - is Temazepam.

Isn't Ambien what that Kennedy dude (Patrick Kennedy) used when he slept walked, drove somewhere, crashed into a tree and blamed it on Ambien? He was a US Congressman at the time. I believe it is the *Ambien* defense if you do something really stupid in the middle of the night.
I like Lunesta. Lets me sleep for 5-7 hours when I need to. Not too groggy the next morning.
The "Ambien defense" is starting to rear its ugly head, thanks, in part, to Rep. Patrick Kennedy's nighttime excursion around Capitol Police barricades in Washington, DC. True to form, the Kennedy's dodged potential legal ramifications for their actions with clever lawyers and the novel notion that "the Ambien made him do it" as an excuse for getting behind the wheel of a 2,000 lb automobile and nearly mowing down a Capitol Police officer.

I've tried both, and Temazepam works the best for me. I fall softly into a quiet and restful sleep and awake with no groggy, hungover feeling.
