The worst movie I've seen in recent memory has to be The Lady in the Water. Positively dreadful.
Lady in the Water was a really dumb movie. It was just a bedtime story that he adapted into a movie. It was a style movie that didn't even hit on that level as well.
Dreadful is a good way to describe that one. I know a good amount that love it though.

AI (Artifical Intelligence) directed by Steven Spielberg - God that was awful.

Napoleon Dynamite is one of the best movies ever made within it's genre. If one doesn't like that movie it just means you don't have a taste for the genre.

Napoleon Dynamite is an acquired taste. I liked it personally, but I get why a lot of people didn't.

Plan 9 From Outer Space. It's so bad that it's fun to watch.
