Excellent quote showing the Watchtower's pathetic control-freakery.
Some of the most shrill comments in the Watchtower come from this period of the early 1980s, the height of the hysteria surrounding Ray Franz's expulsion and the other bethel "apostates".
Where the hell is djeggnog when when you need it?
I have to wonder if the quoted texts from the 1969 Watchtower articles weren't written by Ray Franz and/or Ed Dunlap. They sound reasonable and don't have the strident voice of the 1981 material. In 1969 Franz and Dunlap were deeply involved in researching the material that would eventually find its way into the Aid to Bible Understanding dictionary that Nathan Knorr wanted so badly. That research led to drastic changes in the WTS organizational structure. It also induced Franz and Dunlap to challenge WTS orthodoxy and ultimately led to their dismissals. There is such a contrast between the reasonable tone the 1969 material has with the paternalistic and condescending tone the 1981 stuff displays. I would have to conclude that they must have been written by different people with different philosophies and mindsets.

what an excellent post, thanks for your research and time
@ slimboyfat - I didn't give much thought to the time frame of when this was written, but you make a very valid point. Thanks.
@ man in black - I think you directed your comment at me. If you did, thanks!! If not, thanks for reading anyway!

Significant information, thanks.
Where the hell is djeggnog when when you need it?
He's still licking his wounds from the ass-whuppin' we gave him on Jgnat's thread about blood. In addition to what everyone else has said, here's a couple more examples that show how badly the Society talks out both sides of their mouths. When you compare the original quote that says:
"...But nowhere do we read that those brothers first, in a skeptical frame of mind, checked the Scriptures to make certain that those letters had Scriptural backing, that the writers really knew what they were talking about."
How do they explain the following information from their own literature:
"Now what should a person do who has inherited by birth one of Christendom's defiled religions? If he takes the attitude that it is wrong to change and that since he was born in that particular religion he should die in it, how is he any different from the members of Judaism who refused to listen to Christ and change to undefiled worship of God? He can no more take for granted that his religion is the true one, the one approved by God, than could those people. He must prove it for himself by studying the Scriptures."------w59 5/15 p. 307 Is It Wrong to Change Religions?
"...As you examine God's Word, you will learn that your love for God will be put to the test. This test may come from close friends or relatives, perhaps members of your own household, who will not approve of your examining the Scriptures."----w69 3/15 p. 167 Why It Is Wise to Examine Your Religion
"...Using the Scriptures to test doctrines is the course commended in the Bible. When Paul and Silas went to Beroea, they preached to the Jews. How did these Jews respond to this Christian preaching? They "were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with the greatest readiness of mind, carefully examining the Scriptures daily as to whether these things were so." (Acts 17:11) The Beroeans were not being fanatical or unreasonable. They did not rely on the word of man alone. The Beroeans made sure of all things. How? By "carefully examining the Scriptures." This is the way Christians should test religious beliefs."-----w60 4/15 p. 229 Does the Bible Teach What You Believe?
@ Mary - I want to thank you for those quotes and that fine research.
But where do you see that all that applies to JW's also? Aren't you reading between the lines, that hypnotic message - EXCEPT JW's!?
LOL Thanks again.

But nowhere do we read that those brothers first, in a skeptical frame of mind, checked the Scriptures to make certain that those letters had Scriptural backing, that the writers really knew what they were talking about.
But nowhere do we read . . . so what??
Boreans aside . . . it doesn't mean it didn't happen . . . perhaps it was standard practice?
