What is a MEMORY PALACE?

It is any place you know so well your memory of it is intimate knowledge you simply will not forget. (You childhood home, for example.)

This, in turn, will serve as a MNEMONIC DEVICE or place of safekeeping for anything you wish to remember (forwards or backwards).

Memory experts "build" a great many of these for various uses.

Example: You have a list of 10 things you must purchase at the store you don't want to forget. Using your Memory Palace you fix these things in place and you cannot forget them.

Here is what you might do.

Imagine the driveway leading up to your childhood home.

Right in the middle of that driveway you place the very first item on your list:

1.A Jar of pickled Garlic (Here is where you FIX the item: Imagine in your mind's eye smashing that jar in the middle of the driveway with the juice running out into the street and the pieces of garlic stinking up the neighborhood. Neighbors are standing shaking their fist at it.

Walk up to the steps leading to the front door. Here is where you place the next item on your list:

2.A large package of Cream Cheese. (You FIX the item: on each step leading to the door some nasty person has taken their boot and scraped off a disgusting lump of Cream Chesse the way you'd scrape dog poop off your shoes! Each step has more than the previous step and the packet of PHILADELPHIA CREAM CHEESE is is crumpled up and stuffed into the last large lump like a cherry in whipped cream.

Now we are at the front door of your chlldhood home which you know so well. You reach for the doorknob and here is where the 3rd item is FIXED:

3. A SixPack of Dr.Pepper. But wait! There is a tiny dwarf dressed as a Doctor hanging on to the knob for dear life with one hand and barely gripping the six pack filled with hot peppers in the other.

Just inside the doorway as you step into the entrance way the 4th item is FIXED:

4. A 50lb bag of Kitty Litter. But, wait! There are 50 cats all digging into a mountain of litter pooping and covering frantically as you stand there with your Mom screaming at you!

And so forth......

Stop. Close your eyes and see how vividly this list is already fixed in your mind right now:

What is smashed in your driveway?

What is scraped off on your steps?

What is hanging from the doorknob?

What is just inside your entrance way?

You see? This is how a MEMORY PALACE works for you.

It works backward as easily as it works forward.

I myself usually don't use this method. I believe it was created by the Romans. There are a great deal of other methods for mneumonics. Use one that works best for you.

Another system is the PEG system.

1=T=Teacup

2=N=Noah's Ark

3=M=Maypole

4=R=Ray of Light (flashlight)

5=L=Law (Policeman)

6=Ch or J=Chin

7=K=King

8=F=Fee (Money)

9=P=Pea (like blackeyed Pea)

etc.

You build your list up to one hundred using a combination of the above.

I've remembered phone numbers for years by reversing the process.

Example: Phone number 9219168 could be converted to PNT PT CH F which becomes: PEANUT PET CHEF. I imagine Mister Peanut with a chef hat on serving my pet on a serving tray.

The more ridiculous and novel your imaginative hooks are the more indelible they become in memory.

Or you could simply memorize whatever it is you're presently dealing with. It takes less storage space than all the games....and you won't have cream cheese cat **** stuck all over your newly filled memory cells!

Depends on how MUCH and how detailed the memories and how FAST you want to remember.

Before I learned mnemonics I memorized PI to a hundred decimal places and 17,302 words of the Rime of the Ancient Mariner in the eighth grade and recited it in class.

But, with mnemonics everything is so much faster and easier.

I was told by an elder once that long term memory is not at all advantageous and is quite problematic for

anyone to proceed further up into the organization.

So I took his advise.

Asperger's Disorder is a milder variant of Autistic Disorder. Both Asperger's Disorder and Autistic Disorder are in fact subgroups of a larger diagnostic category. The name "Asperger" comes from Hans Asperger, an Austrian physician who first described the syndrome in 1944.
