Update on my daughter Ali... finally some good news!

I've posted several times over the past 6 months about my daughter, Ali's severe heart failure due to a virus. It has been a roller coaster ride. Recently her leads from her pacemaker and defibrilator became displaced due to strong coughing due to bronchitis. Her blood sugar skyrocketed because of the infection. They had to turn the pacer off because it was causing damage, and had to wait for her blood sugar to come down so they could do the surgery to reconnect the leads. It took well over 2 weeks to get her blood sugar to come down to normal levels, consistant enough to do the surgery. So surgery was postponed 3 times, and all this time her pacemaker and defibrilator have been off.

Well, the surgery finally happened today. They had to redo all 3 leads. She called a little while ago, just out of surgery, and she is doing ok. She has to stay in a sling for 7 weeks this time to assure that the leads are secure. She may be able to return to work after that, but in the mean time she has no income. She has used up all her disability insurance benefits. Her company has agreed to pay for her health insurance until she returns to work... but she has to get through the expenses of the next couple of months until she can go back to work. I've been helping up till now, but have gone through most my resources. We'll find a way, though. I'm just sooooooo grateful that she made it through todays surgery!

Glad to hear she pulled through.

Maybe there are resources with her county that can help with this rough patch until she can either get back to work or maybe apply for SSDI?

mrsjones, She actually qualifies for ssdi, but she would have to be unemployed to be able to collect it. Ali wants to work Her company has kept her job open for her all this time (since just before Thanksgiving) They have continued to pay for her insurance. Ali was just a month shy of a promotion with her company that would have almost doubled her salary....when this whole journey began. Hopefully, when she returns to work, she can stay on that path.

Loz...it's a catch 22. She has very good insurance. We were told that the type of defibrilator she has would not have been covered by insurance if Ali lived in England. Her pacer and defibrilator are remotely monitored. If something seemed wrong, they would call her. If the defirilator kicks on, they call 911 and send an ambulance.

We are so happy to hear that your daughter Ali has had her surgery and is doing well. Having insurance that covered the expenses and a job that was kept open for her I'm sure has relieved a lot of pressure. She is so blessed to have you for a mother. The next couple months may be a stretch for you both financially but you willl get through it. Sounds like the worst is over.

Hubby and I have lived most of our married lives of 37 years without health insurance. We have survived despite his knee surgery last year.

Best wishes for a continued recovery.
