Dear Adela

    Dear Adela,

I thought you so very much an English lady of refinement and poise that I am beside myself over this turn of events vis-a-vis your current infatuation. It is, without question, out of character for you to behave in a manner that flies in the face of convention and our British social mores. Your extravagant love for the Indian boy causes the mind to boggle. I and my entire family are incredulous that you - the rigid and pure Adela - should have been swept off your feet and into the maelstrom of a turgid affair of the heart.

How could we have known that the houseboy's ministrations to the family's physical needs would have taken such a turn? Into a cold, cold heart has arisen a heated passion; in the bosom of you, the renowned Ice Queen, has been created a premature thaw. Never had I hoped to see such a robust essence of springtime burst forth into the purview of me, your intended. Yet, hoping against hope for the warmth of romance to seize hold of you, I remained steadfast in my devotion toward our union.

While the proper and staid English gentleman that resides within says "No, this cannot be!", I daresay that my losing you to the beautiful man of dark skin, raven hair and milk-white teeth is mitigated by the simple truth that you are unquestionably out of your element. I will leave it to you and your headstrong ways to discern how you have commenced treading upon a path that shall certainly lead to the sure disappointment arising from a broken heart.

Adela, I beg you ... before your heart consents further to this madness, please peer more closely into your looking glass, imagining Adonis there by your side. Consider carefully my words ... before it is too late....

A heartbroken but wiser, abandoned fiance,

    Nigel

    Greetings!

Oh my gawd! How did you come into possession of my personal papers, Ballistic? Did you nick my letter to Adela from Jeeves' hand before it was to have been posted?!?!?

Hello, Syl! Thanks ... I'm now working on Andy Vincent and his nerdish neighbor, Buster.

    Have a great day.

If you're replying to some scam mail which I suspect, I can never keep up the correspondance more than one or two replies (they give up on me). Here's one I got this morning complete with photo:

Your profile is really very interesting. I want to get acquainted with you if you don’t mind. But at first let me introduce myself. My name's Valeriya. And I live in the largest country in the world – Russia. I’m sure that you have ever heard about it.

Many people say that the most beautiful girls live in my country. As for me, I believe that there are many pretty girls all over the world but the beauty is not very important the main thing is to have a beauty soul that not every person has. But I don’t doubt in your beautiful soul because after reading your profile on .com my heart says to me that you are the very person I should to write to. I have a good intuition that never tells me a lie. So, I hope that if you write me back we will be able to become good friends and who knows maybe I am your destiny whom you shouldn’t let off. If you are interested in me and want to know me better, please, write me back on my this e-mail. I will be waiting for your letter with sweet impatience. Remember that all depends on you.

I send you my friendly kiss in your cheek.

    Your new friend from Russia,

    Valeriya.

Thanks, Ballistic, for sharing that. I see a story in there - somewhere. I've never ventured much past Europe proper.

Mine, of course, is pure fiction, based loosely upon E.M. Forster's A Passage to India.

At age 17, I read Sons and Lovers.

    I'm still mystified.

Sorry Coco, some of us on the board years ago used to do "scam the scammers" which is what I thought you were doing. I get scam mails all the time.
