what if i told you that the same calculator could give you two different answers depending on what symbol you used for the division. It should make no difference.
would every one agree that the following are equal 1/2 and 1÷2
yet copy and paste the following equations into the calculator i am giving you a link to
6÷2(1+2)=x
6/2(1+2)=x
I think it's 1.
I have always used PEMDAS. Thus,
6÷2(1+2)=x
Solve 1 +2 first (parentheses).......3
Exponents (none)
Multiply next: 2x3=6
Divide next: 6 divided by 6 = 1
Addition: none
Subtraction: none
Answer: 1

This is all alarming. Soon, rockets won't escape earth's gravity, the speed of light will be acheived by a Volkswagen, stable chemicals will explode.
I will do the impossible here- I will tie this silly nonsense to the Watchtower.
Just as we mathematical amateurs have no business thinking we understand algebraic equations as simple as this, which the experts will see right through, WT has no business thinking for millions of people on the topics of science and politics. They are bumbling idiots in those subjects just as most of us are when examining basic algebra.
Just as this equation should be no more than a "thing that makes us go 'HMM,'" WT's guidance should be no more to us than the wild thoughts of a monkey.

The calculator only does what you tell it to do. YOU have to determine first the answer to what is in the parentheses, then feed the calculator.
6÷2(1+2)=x
X=1
6/2(1+2)
6/2(3)
6/6
6/6 = 1
For X=9 the formula would have to be written this way:
(6/2)(1+2)
Google is calculating it like this:
(6 / 2) * (1 + 2) = 9
I entered the equation: "6÷2(1+2)=x" directly onto wolframalpha.com and got this:

I tried this on paper and pencil and got 1, but since wolfram is usually right i knew i did something wrong.

According that site it looks like it's supposed to be done like this:
6÷2(3) parenthesis 1st
3(3) then left to right

I really need to remember the basics and fundamentals
The order of evaluaton matters. The equation as written is ambiguous, it could mean either (6/2)*(1+2)=x=9 or 6/(2*(1+2))=x=1. That's why careful programmers put extra parentheses in, even if they really shouldn't be necessary--it shows exactly what the order is, so the next poor soul who has to fix a bug will know without a doubt what was the intended order of evaluation. Otherwise you have to remember something like this correctly (especially right-to-left...OOPS...left to right!):
The mathematical order of operations does apply. For example (2 + 3) * 2 = 10 while 2 + 3 * 2 = 8. The order of precedence in C is BFDMAS: Brackets (or parentheses), Functions, Division or Multiplication (from left to right, whichever comes first), Addition or Subtraction (also from left to right, whichever comes first).
Since the correct answer to this is on now way going to help me get drunk or laid, I think I am gonna have to go with "No one cares."
