OTWO, I hear you. I'm always asked for my mother's maiden name (last name) for security reasons.

So snowbird, I'll give out great-grandmothers, first names only.

Mona, Agnes, Gertrude, Elizabeth (born mid to late 1800's)

Awww, what the heck. G-G Grandmothers - Margaret, Jane, Hellen, Sarah, Agnes, Mary, Elizabeth, Hannah (early to middle 1800's)

My family tree goes way back. Scottish heritage; we do that. The repeated first names can be attributed to the Scottish naming pattern, which does seem to bear out once I started filling in my family tree. It's broken down in modern times, of course.

    • First born son named for the paternal grandfather
    • Second son named for the maternal grandfather.
    • Third son named for the father.
    • First born daughter for the paternal grandmother.
    • Second daughter for the maternal grandmother
    • Third daughter for the mother.

But my granddaughter's (patrilineal) African lineage goes even farther back. Her lineage was preserved through song.

    I meant first names, only.

    Sorry for the confusion.

    One was called Elizabeth.

That's the only one I can recall off the top of my head. We do have the family tree done back that far but I can't recall their first names.

OnTheWayOut, security prompts usually ask for your grandmother's maiden name. If you're using your grandmother's first name, you're doing it wrong. ;) People here are likely just fine posting first names only. But yes, you're right to exercise caution, and no, I won't be posting mine.

I don't know my GGM's names, bur my grandmother's names were Mabel Zenith, and Ethel. Pretty bad, eh?
