What's a polite way to ask a man to keep his hands to himself while conversing in a group with you?

This neighbor of mine and I were sitting in chairs on the deck with other people.

He always touched me whenever he said anything to me or I said anything to him.

It was as if he was using touch like an antenna to send and receive signals.

I didn't know what to do, so instead of risking embarrassment for us both, I did nothing but stand up and step away.

I stepped away after he attempted to caress my hamstrings on one leg.

    *shudder*

Wonder why 60+ year old men think that a woman being nice to him means she's hot for him.

Also wonders why it's only the smoking, beer guzzling, scrawny, bony, and smelly old men who do that.

Politeness is not called for in this situation. A loud, "Stop that!" or "Don't touch me!" would be appropriate. Or better yet, remove his hand, and then walk away.

you dont have to ASK someone to refrain from touching you!

you TELL them and if you want to be nice at first you simply
say, i am not comfortable with your touching me, so please
    be mindful of that, thanks

and the thing is... ANYTHING they might say to dismiss your
boundary means they want to control the situation....
"oh, i am just a touch-y person" yada yada....

ask, my ass!!! set your boundary and defend it!!

Remove his hand from your body.

If he persists, say loudly to him "WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU ARE DOING?"

As Jamie said, there's no "polite" way of doing this. He's got no right to touch you. Period.

It happens so seldom that it's a shocker when it does.

    Thank you.

I will say something like you said.

How about this? "Touch me again and I'll saw your fucking head off."

    What "shit?"

I was thinking of saying something like that, Sooner.

Grab his hand and one finger and look him straight in the eyes, "Touch me again and I'll break it."
