    input welcome:

3 children collect 4 different shells on the beach. (4 shells in total, not 4 shells per child) Each child has a bucket. How many different ways can the children take the shells home, allowing for the possibility of some children not taking any shells in their bucket.

It's not logical for a six year old to have to figure that out, Let them play with seashells at the beach!!!!!

I rather make something with them.

Will check back for the answer!!!

The first shell can be placed in 3 ways. the second in 3 ways (9), the 3rd in 3 ways (27) ...the 4th in 3 ways (81)

    Correct answer is 81..

Too tricky for this 41 year old...

They could crush them w rocks and take them home as powder. That makes 82.

No way that's six year old math, lol!

I failed this part of math in high school. Just couldn't get a grasp on it. Hated Geometry too, even though I passed it. Always loved algebra though.

I'll ask my wife when she gets home (she's teaches kindergarten).

My money is on her agreeing with purplesofa. Six year olds are learning how to count, they'll get to calculus later.

edited to add, 3 4 is correct only if you're dealing with all the shells. You add at least two combinations if they throw away one shell to make an even number or throw away all of them because they can't figure it out.

Some 6 year olds can do calculus.
