Robert Scheer on Bush Spending

I’m throwing this out there as flame bait but also experimenting and trying to be a bit more objective then my liberal Democrat upbringing would normally allow:

    >Now we get to see just how cowardly the Democrats in Congress can be. President Bush has
    >proposed the most preposterous military buildup in human history .. annual spending of
    >$451 billion by 2007 .. and nary
    >a word of criticism has been heard from the other side of the aisle. The president is drunk
    >with the popularity that his war on terrorism has brought, and those sober Democrats and
    >Republicans, who know better, are afraid to wrestle him for the keys to the budget before he
    >drives off a cliff.

I think it is correct that some of their silence comes from cowardice however the polls show the overwhelming majority; both Democrats and Republicans trust his judgment. And considering the amount and depth of expertise he has at his disposal, why not? Bush is far from alone in the decision process.

    >The red ink that Bush wants us to bleed to line the pockets of the defense industry, along
    >with the tax cuts for the rich, will do more damage to our country than any terrorist. The
    >result will be an economically hobbled United States, unable to solve its major domestic
    >problems or support meaningful foreign aid, its enormous
    >wealth sacrificed at the altar of military hardware that is largely without purpose.

Yes we will bleed for a while, like we did during World War 1 and World War 2. We will run at a deficit for some years until we are back on our feet. Study history, it repeats itself often. Do you understand the reason war-bonds were sold in the past? It was felt that getting into a manageable amount of debt was worth it because the very survival of our country depended on it. Do you not understand this is World War 3, do you understand this is no small task ahead for us, do you understand it is our very survival that is at stake, or am I stating the obvious again?

    >with the tax cuts for the rich

This is my most favorite mantra of all. I have said it myself many times parroting what I heard; but it’s also total bullshit. It is a fact that people of wealth already shoulder the majority of taxes paid in this country, sorry but it’s true. Who was it that said if you repeat a lie often enough, people will just believe it? Gerbels perhaps? Not sure, but it seems to work.

    >However, no such axis exists. North Korea is a tottering relic of a state whose nuclear
    >operation was about to be bought off under the skilled leadership of the South Korean
    >government when Bush jettisoned the deal.

Yes you are quite correct here, Bush blew the opportunity for South Korea to receive a nice piece of paper from North Korea stating that they would not lob missiles and nukes at them. Who was it now, a famous person in history, can’t recall who now, anyway he returned triumphantly from a meeting with Hitler, (the Axis power of the past), paper in-hand only to have all hopes of peace dashed as good old Adolph broke every promise written on that paper.
