Why are atheists celebrating the rapture?
A celebration excuse for believers and non-believers alike!
A rapture party is a great way for believers and non-believers to get together and celebrate the end of the world, or a grace period on armageddon. Rapture parties have cropped up across the land in response to the prediction that the world will end on May 21, 2011 at 6PM, regardless of your local time zone. Most of these predictions come from Family Radio owner Harold Camping, who has spent millions of dollars promoting his end of the world message.
The idea is that saved Christians will be taken up in the rapture while ordinary people who are not saved will have to endure a world-ending earthquake. Therefore, skeptics and atheists have started planning parties to celebrate what they think will be a non-event. There are even Facebook groups dedicated to looting the homes of people who have been raptured up. No matter how the world ends, or if, there will be plenty of parties to celebrate the apocalypse, and in either event there will be a double helping of irony.
