My take is that no one should be allowed to get married by the state.
Leave the marriage making to the religious institutions and let the state perform civil unions for any who request it.
Lets have total separation of church and state.
If some religions choose only to marry people once they have a civil union recognized by the state then so be it. But as far as I'm concerned the state should just ignore the marriage making of the god worshipping kind.
And while they're at it... may as well let the civil unions just be civil (for all citizen regardless of relationship status not just for those in a somewhat commited monogomous relationship). That way a person who is discriminated against now for being single can one day designate another person, family or friend, as a benificary for their social security or as a covered individual on their health insurance policy and whatever other perks the married now enjoy.
