I am not a fan of grotesque cartoons. They are an essential part of American political thought from the start. I read a lot of Revolutionary and Federalist history. John Adams vs. Thomas Jefferson led to campaign strategies far worse than those pictures. They knew each other very well. Jefferson was the worst. Of all the bios I've read, the actual Jefferson is the most distorted in his official US cultural bio.
I just don't see how these photos further debate on ideas or persons. They do appeal to the base, however, and so they serve a function. My nephew sent me one of Obama eating watermelon based on those old slave drawings by Southern whites. He is now blocked forever.
