I would like to think that 2014 will break the hold of the WT on many JWs, but I saw how many quickly forgot 1975, the same people who were sure that was the year. Now they remember nothing...

steve2 thanks for the reality class. i've noticed the hopeful posts about W/T's demise have really slowed down (maybe i miss and have limited time to read) but thought i'd given up my own delusions but we want what we want and get hopeful/carried away.

As much as anybody else, I would delight in seeing the WTS collapse in a heap - and just go a bloody way for good!

However (and sadly), Steve2 raises quite a valid point, - the passing of the year 2014 (or anything else, for that matter) is unlikely to see this event come about. One thing the abomination that is the WTS has been successful at is ensuring its own survival.

    This hardly should be surprizing:

    - in nature, it would seem that the nastier an organism is, the more likely it is to survive. (eg. after a nuclear explosion, the only life found consists of rats and cockroaches).

If the media cared enough or if someone wanted to create a documentary on JWs and what's wrong with it, I think then people's eyes will be open.

The best way to hurt the Borg is to educate the public enough so that fewer and fewer join. If the conversion rate drops below the death rate, then we'll be getting somewhere.

Getting people to exit en masse isn't going to happen. It may go up a tic with a scandal or a date like 2014 but there won't be a mass exodus unless the business corporation and religious corporation turn on each other. Then you may see a schism and a certain significant number making the choice not to choose either side. But that happening is a longshot.

    For about 5 minutes maybe.

In general, when it comes to exposure-type documentaries, people 'see what they want to see and disregard the rest' (Paul Simon). But inoculating people can be effective sometimes - provided it doesn't backfire (i.e., inadvertently create sympathy for them).

I think you hit the nail on the head. Religions like the booty and will do and say whatever to stay in business. The Boys of Brooklyn will come up with something just like every other Denomination has had to come up with some new angle. Baptist baptisms are way down, watch for the new recruiting campaign to kick in.

I agree with you Ding, that jw forget way too fast events like 1975. I was amazed that in the new video that was released at the 2011 DC that they mentioned "Those Now Living Will Never Die". Will that affect any jw, of course not.

1914, 1925, 1975 and many other failed prophecies did not do it. Neither have the many scandals involving blood, child abuse among others. 2014 will come and go, just like 1975 and Harold Campings rapture. A few might wake up but the WT will go on.

What Pyramidscheme said - besides the fact that the WTBTS (to my knowledge) has said exactly zero about the year 2014. It is merely IMHO non-JW speculation that this will mark a big transition in JW rank & file thinking. Logical, perhaps - but speculation nonetheless.
