Do they owe us anything?

How do you feel? Does the society owe us for misleading us or do we just blame ourselves?

Imagine we were sold a pension plan that guaranteed us a certain return.
They show us evidence of its performance in nice looking graphs an charts in small books we can keep and study. We are even encouraged to get others into this plan as it is so certain. Only a fool would turn down this opportunity.
After many years of paying in to or pension fund, we start to question its performance in the yearly figures we cant see the growth they promised. They tell us don't be so hasty the real returns come at the end , just trust us and be patient.
One day we notice a book in the library , you recognise it as one that the pension firm quoted from in there little book that proved their investments were trust worthy.
You look to see the information quoted and are startled!
The quote they have has been taken out of context. In fact it reads opposite to what they claimed.
This gets you worried."Can I trust this pension fund ,do I keep putting money in?"
You decide to tell one of your friends , who is also paying money into this fund ,what you have discovered. When you explain what you have found he is shocked also, "How can you doubt what we have been told, don't you know these people are completely trust worthy?"
Your friend is not interests in explanations, he has invested a lot of money, if the scheme does not perform as promised he will lose every thing.
In fact in order not to her about what you have found out this friend now ignores you.
You are gutted and upset. You have found out that this pension is not all it was cracked up to be , you have invested all your spare money and more into it after being assured of it certainty, and now your friends won't talk to you as you have doubts.
You decide to write to the company.
You spend many hours thinking of an appropriate letter explaining you concerns and send it off. Days go by as you awaited your reply.
There it is on the floor , the letter you have been waiting for.
Perhaps you will see an apology , or an explanation of what has happened.
When you read it your joy turns to despair. First they rebuke you for doubting them, and tell you you should put their trust in them , after all they have shown you proof that this pension will give you a massive return. Then comes the bad news.
They have withdrawn you from the pension scheme. You are no longer to talk to anyone in the pension scheme and they have been told not to talk to you. All you savings have been confiscated and will only be returned if you recant of you doubts an continue paying money in.
    Well enough is enough.
You have wasted 1000's pounds of money you could not afford. You gave up holidays and other luxuries in order to get the most from you money.
You have little time left before you retire and no chance of saving much money again.
All your friends have abandoned you even you family is cold.
    One last resort.
    "I'll take them to court"
So off you go to a solicitor.
So "Mr ****** you believed it when they told you , you were guaranteed this vast return on you investment?"
"Well yes, they showed me evidence , lots of figures even proof of how it has performed in the past"
"Didn't you know that these returns cart be guaranteed?"
    "Yes but they promised"
"Oh come on, you aren't that stupid?"
"Well..er, they are hiding the truth, they know they are misleading people"
"Look you had the choice you should have checked this company out before investing, If we sued the banks and pension companies every time there schemes failed to perform up to expectation they would be bankrupt"
"But they mislead me , I want my money back"
"Look you signed a form that says they have the right to use your money as they see fit.”
“But I was mislead I‘ve lost my life everything”
    “Too bad”

Is this the way it has to be for us?

I think your question at the end should read, "Is this the way it has to be for us?"

    In one word, Yes.

Like it or not, we agreed to be a part of their group. That is a core fact. At any time we could walk away, that is a fact. Unfortunitly for most emotional strings are attached. That is what makes it so hard to leave, but the choice is ours to make.

For most of the people I know, they never agreed to be a part of anything. They were born into it.
    Do they owe us anything?
    I think they owe many.
Unfortionatly, some of the most important losses they could never repay.
To some, who have lost a loved one for refusing medical treatment.
To some, Who have lost their own life for similar reasons or for commiting suicide.
Not to mention the importance of being shunned by your family, this could also be compaired to a death since they are treating you as if you have already died. I could go on, but I would be here forever.
I would love to hold them responsible for all the hurt they have caused.
    Anyone know a good lawyer?!

Mostly, we have only ourselves to blame. Especially those of us who converted. We all heard the stories and comments being made over the years by others. We all studied in the Bible with them, be it their NWT or another version.

As much as I would like them to shoulder the responsibility, they did not tie me down and force me to do anything. Clever manipulations, granted, but still, I was not forced.

When I was baptised, I felt that something was not right, but did it anyway. When I went door to door, I discussed only things I felt comfortable with, but if I had stayed, would I have gone on and accepted the things that bothered me? Most likely.

Like very clever con-men who operate just within the law, they duped us with promises of everlasting life and benefits of friendships and improved living standards today. Like suckers, we fell for it. Not all that different than clever magazine salesmen who go door to door selling their wares. Basically, we let our guard down.

What can we do about it? Absolutely nothing. That is, unless we fell victim to some of the criminal practices that are coming to light. I am simply getting on with my life and hoping that if the wife and her brats don't see the light, that she find a more suitable hubby within her cult. Ultimately, though, the Watchtower will be tried, convicted, and sentenced to death (provided scriptures are true), by the court of judgement that they preach is rapidly approaching. Odd how they are so eagerly looking forward to their own execution.

If God's Spirit is filling a Kingdom Hall, how is it that Satan can manuever the ones within that Kingdom Hall at the same time?

It is true many were born into the Jehovah's Witnesses, thereby having little choice but to join. That is true of me too. However, that person (including myself) still chose to join the cult. Allow me to explain.

Let's say you were raised in the cult and got baptized around the ages of 13-15 like most of us are. (I was baptized at 19, but that is another issue.) Each day from that point on, you choose to belong to the cult. Every day you wake up and choose to be a Jehovah's Witness. Because if you don't make this choice, you no longer are in the cult. Now this is not a process that you think about in your conscience. However the facts are you are still a Jehovah's Witness until you say, "enough, no more of this garbage." You can at any point get out, and you know you can, because, they can't make you stay.

They can make it hard on you by causing you to loose close "friends" and family, but the choice is still yours. So in my opinion, if you are looking for somebody to blame, blame yourself.

The way I see it, we owe the organization. We owe public exposure to them for being the lying cheat that they are. Besides that, the only one who really owes you anything in life is you.

being born into it i think they owe me a lot:

=missed celebrations (b/days etc) - nothing wrong with a good piss up is there!
=the loss of my sanity - i think i wouldnt have so many depression problems if i was like every other kid at school
=the loss of my mother - she wouldnt have taken her own life if the society were'nt there to say 'you cant leave your husband' (she did leave for a few months and took us kids with her only to feel real guilty by witness friends bugging her to go back to my dad)

and thats just a couple - of course they owe me something, they owe me a decent life and a decent upbringing which is one thing i most certainly have not had

I'm with scorpion. We have a duty to make the truth known. The society obviously misrepresents themselves, which certainly allows it to make far more converts than it normally would if all the facts were presented up front. Furthermore, they manage to fool a lot of people into saddling themselves with guilt, even after they know it's not really the truth. It would never be my aim to bring down the society. People have every right to be JWs. Let's do all we can though to make it as easy as possible for potential converts to see what they're getting into up front as well as smooth the path for anyone who wants out. The rest is up to the individual.

As for compensation, if we were all compensated for every bad break and swindle there'd be no money left. Let's pull ourselves together and get on with our lives. This forum is a great place to both help one another with our experiences and observations as well as expose the WT for what it sometimes does to people.
