Here in the land of Oz we're enjoying watching our expert commentators, Roy Slaven and H G Nelson, bringing the Winter Olympics to us on the Seven Network.

If you guys and gals can catch it, it's worth it, even to see what the Sydney Olympians enjoyed in 2000.

Already they have given expert commentary on the figure skating events.

Do you know what these expressions in figure skating mean:

    staining the ice?

    tightening the nut?

    turning the screw?

showing the arses (to the judges!)

    cutting the rug?

    a 69 ?

    blowing the flute?

It's well worth tuning in to find out for yourself!

    Cheers,
    Ozzie

The good old Roy and HG. Your post reminded me to change the channel. Thanks.

PS. Remember the various terms they coined up for the gymnastics in the 2000 Games? Who can forget the "Hello Boys" manouver?

OMG - look where they put Tasmania on the weather map? And New Zealand?

Ah, the sick and twisted humour of oz. I lurve it!!!!!

Personally, I didn't catch much of Roy and HG while the 2000 olympics were on, except for the diving commentry. Missed the ol' ABC gig they used to have. Was quite entertaining - Club Buggery, wasn't it Ozziepost?

Well, here in the U.S., our 'hometown' coverage sucks big, big time. We could be watching live, but NBC figures they would rather tape it for later consumption. So while the snowboarders were going live today at 12 noon (ET), NBC didn't bother beginning its coverage until 3pm. Then they cut back and forth, focusing on the key names while not showing the rest of the competitors, undercutting with backstories, filler, and commercials aplenty.

The same is true for most of the coverage. They could do it live, but would rather slice and dice the coverage so that we barely get more than 5 minutes of coverage at a time. They must think Americans are so moronic we get bored in a couple of minutes, only care about the American athletes or (if necessary, sigh) the best athletes if they are from another country.

I am beginning to despise the way these Olympics are being trashed by NBC.

    Seeker,

    I SO agree!!!

I live close enough to the Canadian border to get the CBC on a Windsor station, and my husband and I were forced to watch the opening event of the Olympics -- Women's 15K XCountry -- on Channel 9!!! NBC was totally ignoring the event because the only U.S. competitor wasn't competitive. (She came in 54th or something...)

It was a very exciting event, with a massed start rather than intervals, and the eventual winner, an Italian, won the event despite having broken her pole, getting her coach's as a replacement, and having lost 8 seconds on the eventual 2nd place finisher. About 2 kms from the end she just hustled back up so that on the last downhill in the grooves she was it looked as though her skis were touching the Russian's (I think it was a Russian...). Anyway, then she sprinted for the finish line and won by several yards. All legs and lungs, as the Canadian commentator said!!!

Note that CANADIAN BROADCASTING covered this event DESPITE THE FACT that the two Canadian entrants were not competitive, either. I believe they finished 33 and 37 or something. Fortier sisters.

My husband (a naturalized Canadian!) thought it a shame that the U.S. station wasn't covering the Opening Event of these held-in-the U.S. Olympic games. I concur.

    outnfree,

I so wish I could get Canadian coverage of these games, because the American coverage is a joke.

For the first day's medal ceremony, the host introduced the ceremony, we saw for a couple of minutes some artistic dancing introducing it, the host cut in and basically apologized for forcing us to watch something that wasn't bottom-line oriented. We later got the medal ceremony, taped, so they could feed it to us in bite-size portions.

When you have the Olympics in your own backyard, and you still don't get to watch them live, it stinks.

When you have an event where an American is not competive, and yet they talk more about him or her than the talented athletes from other countries that finish first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth....etc., it stinks.

When you have a sporting event where there is as much commercial time as sports time, it stinks.

When you have the Olympic organization banning live coverage any other way so you are stuck watching what NBC spoon-feeds us, it stinks.

Oh well, I'll try to watch some events anyway, so that I can at least see the athletes do their thing...in five-minute bites...sigh.
