Crap! Well, I was going to make a comment about me being able to flap my ears, but it just wouldn't fit into this serious thread...

I believe the Bible, especially in Revelation, describes angels having wings.
Also, the design of the Ark of the Covenant had 2 cherubs with wings covering them on top of the lid, if I'm not mistaken.
Remember, alot of things in the Bible are symbolic. Spirit creatures wouldn't "need" any of this.
This is just the best way for these ancient dudes to describe what they saw.

Nah, they're just for show. Like the spoiler on a 4-cylinder Honda Civic.
Edit: Oh, serious thread Zid? Now I'm just being flippant...

ziddinia, you have wings in your avatar. Are you an angel or are you Mothman?
Ok now, to give a serious answer--people make up lots of folklore about angels that's not in the bible. Who said they were going to watch over dubs as they go door to door to separate the wheat from the chaff (or whatever that was)?
PS-If you can ever find it, I highly recommend a thread a few years ago about an email circulating among the dubbies. It was about how the angels would help them in field service, something like, "And the angels said, dust your feet off and keep going." Poster Mary wrote her own version, "And the angels said, LMAO." Anyway, if you can find it, it is one of the funniest things on the Internet ever IMO.

[To Rebel8 - I'm a DRAGON - but somebody here on-board WAS "Mothman" - last Halloween!!]
Serious comment...
Like several others have said - the wings were probably supposed to be symbolic.
However, since time immemorial, man has envied the birds their wings...
It just made sense to put "wings" on "spirit" beings, symbolizing their supposed ability to move beyond the world of humans.
There are many 'wings' portrayed on ancient deities and demi-gods - look at the "Ishtar" gate from Babylon, for example.

No serious lol, good point Knowsnothing, but cherubs spoken in ezekiel and rev refer to angels?
zidina: what im trying to understand is that in the first five books the word angel or messanger did not refer to a celestial being.

I think I see what the problem is: You are trying to make sense of the bible.

Rebel8, that is a fantastic thread! I'm going to go back and 'mark' it!
Joey, can't help you there. I haven't done that sort of research. However, supposedly "angels" visited Lot and his family in Sodom - or was that Gomorrah??
But no mention of THEM having "wings", either... I would postulate that the meaning evolved as the Hebrews came into contact with other people - like the Babylonians, who built the "Gate of Ishtar", which has winged mythological creatures portrayed upon it - causing the Hebrews to modify or add to their own mythology...
See if Leolaia ever posted something about 'angels'...
