    Texas - red.

    BTW, Sylvia - it got started long before Y2K.

    I remember the state-by-state color map when George Bush the First was elected; except back then the Republican states were blue and the Democratic states were red.

    I have never heard a coherent reason on why this was changed.

    JWoods, I don't understand it, either, but I believe the late Tim Russert had something to do with it.

    You're right; it was the reverse at one time.

    Now, in order to make a distinction, I have to employ a mnemonic device: Red = Rep.

    I said a coherent reason.

    There is a coherent reason. For the major networks to use the same colors made recognition easier for viewers.

    But it is completely arbitrary. If anything, it seems backwards.

    I live in a red state, but in my immediate area we have pockets of blue, surrounded by pools of red. So, in a way I guess it really is purple.

    Red and blue mixed together yield purple.
