I really hate that song because it is so sad and it seems the only time you hear it is when something terrible happens.
Since Japan is not a Christian country, I do not know the circumstances of your country well.
But, I think that this song is a pure hymn, and that "something terrible happens" and this song are irrelevant, IMO.
Well, I think that, as for me, this song is teaching that "We are loved by God's eternal love (Grace) even if we die."
Probably, why this song is heard in your country when people are sad is that this song is teaching us "God's love" (Grace; "Chesedh" in Hebrew).
Of course, it is OK that you dislike the song "Amazing Grace."
For you, I would present other song.
