I'm sure WT has some legalistic argument to use here. I can't see them incurring the wrath of the government without some legal justification however distasteful it might be. One they like to bandy about when calls are made for religious instructors to be vetted is that they don't teach "Sunday school." Or some other folderol which ignores the fact that whether the school is called "Sunday school", a Bible study or something else the law's intent is to vet people who spend time with children. the name of the activity is not important. But I'm sure we will hear some such silliness from their legal and PR people if this case goes public.

I think it is very interesting that the Watchtower tries to appear different from all other religions, but then tries to appear as either a congregational religion (run by the members locally), and/or an ecclesiastical organization (run by a heirarchy from the top down). For most of their history they have pointed to the clergy of the Roman and Orthodox Catholic churches as being organizations of Satan, and yet they too run their peculiar brand of "theocracy" in very much the same manner. One such "sub-group" (which essentially covers everyone above the local elders) is the so-called "Religious Order of Jehovah's Witnesses."

    From Wikipedia:

"Among their corporations, the Religious Order of Jehovah's Witnesses cares for matters specific to Jehovah's Witnesses special full-time servants. In a particular branch, traveling overseers, special pioneers, and branch staff are considered members of the Order of Special Full-time Servants and the Bethel Family; [ 5 ] globally, their order is the Worldwide Order of Special Full-Time Servants of Jehovah’s Witnesses. [ 6 ] Male and female members of such religious orders typically make a formal vow of poverty and are granted certain status and exemptions by many governments. While Jehovah's Witnesses do not consider members of their religious orders to be clergy, they recognize that a government may consider them such for administrative purposes."

Whenever the Watchtower gets into a bind, they always find a way to point away from WT headquarters. They will try to claim exemptions from local laws because they say they are a "religious order."

    Give me a break.

I imagine that the New York HQ staff, should the Victoria state prosecutors actually take this case to court, will simply point at the local Australian branch as being at fault. A few local branch officers will take the heat and may have to fall on their own swords. Eventually the WT will comply - they'll have to - but will describe their travails in court as "persecution by Satan's agents."

The reality is that Victoria's laws make common sense and are designed to protect youthful and vulnerable young JWs and the public at large. This should simply be considered an obligation to Caesar. The Watchtower Society should welcome the opportunity to comply with this law to show the Australian public that they are "law abiding citizens," not law breakers who want to protect molestors and other criminals.

This was good news after being off the forum for 10 days!

Even if the only effect is to FORCE the WT to comply with a very simply easy law, Stephen will have done well, but i hope the victorian government goes much further. I don't think they would have taken on the case if it was not viable either...and i dont think they can 'settle out of court' with a goverment judicial system either.

I wonder if they would pull the old 'obey god rather than man' line? Perhaps the the WT has lost its balls to try and repeat its glory days of fighting for its rights???

I suspect if this hits the mainstream media the JWs will be urged to not read the news papers as they are 'lies by Satans agents'...

    Seeker, what was your source?

It would make things easier if Steven made himself more available to the exJW online community.

    Barbara's comments

Under the Victorian State Charter of Human Rights, "religious belief" the WTS and JW teach that there is at least one resurrected member of the FDS in Heaven per every congregation worldwide. By having the FDS charged, this allows the State Government to seize every single Kingdom Hall in the world. How? By hiding behind the religion the WTS has created a sanctimonious front and attributed everything to the FDS. Therefore the FDS are at fault.

The Governing Body operates in Victoria as they sign their "person" name on the inside of many books which are distributed in Victoria, Australia.

Thanks Barbara for your comments as it does help to make things clearer. I am also starting to understand why his submission was so hard to follow but he was obviously trying to cover all basis.

I have never before heard the claim that there is at least one resurrected member of the FDS in heavern per every congregation worldwide. Is this written somewhere by the JWs?

Also, I have read that the GB signed bibles when visiting a country and provided the dignatories with them but are they also putting a personal signature in some of their books that they have distributed?
