Someone mentioned on a Facebook post recently that people drop this stance ONLY when the "mistake" affects them personally.

I can attest to that. I felt like the Borg must have been wrong about a lot of things for a long time but had faith that Jehovah would clear things up in his own time. I could let the organization insult my intelligence indefinitely as part of the group. But when my intelligence was insulted face-to-face by a pair of elders telling me that to question them was equal to challenging the authority of Jesus Christ as head of the congregation, the scales fell off my eyes and I was then willing to see the "mistakes" more clearly and examine them further.

It is interesting that the cult has a code-word for when this happens. They call it being "stumbled" and put the responsibility on the person himself, refusing to even address whether mistakes were made.

You can see this same frame of mind in the followers of Warren Jeffs and his "Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. " For many of the women in the compound, no matter how much wrong you put before them concerning this predator, they either give him a pass or deny any wrongs were done becuase after all, he is a "prophet."

Or check out some of the documentaries on Wayne Bent aka Michael Travesser and the "Strong City Cult". Even after his prediction of the worlds end on October 31, 2007, followers refused to believe that he is not "The Messiah".

As long as someone is convinced in their mind that a certain person or group is chosen specially by God, there is not much you can do for them unless they are willing to listen to sound reason.

Sweeney: THAT is a very astute observation and I'm embarrassed to think that is may be true in my case. It's must easier to overlook mistakes when they only affect someone else. All different story when it's your own ox being gored.

Great comment Mad Sweeney - that is exactly what happened to me too! Yes - I too was "stumbled" by being lied to by a CoBE and his side kick, during an elders meeting where the spirit was suspossed to operating. It kicked me up the arse and woke me up.

I don't hold them too much liable for the mistakes themselves. However, when they insist that people abide by and teach the bad doctrines, even when they can prove them wrong using their own Bible, then it becomes more than a mistake. You are then preventing anyone from fixing these errors, and forcing them into trouble when they could have prevented it.

I questioned a JW at UCSB. He had a table and a lot of WTS lit.

I asked about the false generation teaching from 1952 through 1995 and all he could say was "don't worry about that".

He never even tried to give an answer.
