Assuming you've been baptized you be considered as having been disassociated -- not disfellowshipped. Well, that was in the olden days. Today they just announce you're no longer a JW.

Talk about cowardly, they put their tail tween their legs and say that you've made the decision, not them. That way Brookly can't be accused of sedition -- encouraging the avoidance of military service. Talk about fear of man, they take the cake.

    Thanks for serving.

I wish I had the great advice that would resolve this whole problem.

I do suggest that you read both of Steve Hassan's books, COMBATTING CULT MIND CONTROL and RELEASING THE BONDS; EMPOWERING PEOPLE TO THINK FOR THEMSELVES.

You might gain great insight on dealing with family after reading all that.

As for my advice, even if it's one-way, keep contact with your family. Send them a card or letter or email now and again. You know JW's so don't go on and on about military training and activity, but always mention it because it is your life. But send them wedding photos, tell them some stuff that normal family would want to know. Occasionally send a bouquet of flowers or a fruit basket to Mom, Grandma, anyone else.

I hate to say it, but this is one place that I do agree with the JWs. I don't think there's anything honorable about what the US military is doing around the world.

    Defending our freedoms? PAH

More like keeping Raytheon's bottom line nice and fat...

You are doing great...keep it up! Don't worry right now about the family...focus on your goals and give them time to get used to the idea that you are in the military.

    We are proud of you!

Lucky! You qualified for SEAL training. Impressive! You handled your family great. JW's like to blame the victim of shunning and claim it was YOUR choice, but they are the ones turning their backs on their own blood. I appreciate what you are doing. I don't have to agree with all of the policies of my country to truly appreciate people like you. So Thank You.

I have a nephew who is a Navy Seal. Even as a teenager he was so fit and dedicated to martial arts it was unbelievable. You are truly a rare breed.

Did you ask your mother exactly who is "giving up their family" here?

Thank you for your service, seaman lucky1rish. Because of the Watchtower attidudes you must deal with, you must sacrifice more than many others to offer it.

Thank you for your service to our country, and best wishes on your upcoming wedding. Your family has failed to drag you down to the cult's level...epic win for you!

The United States has a foreign policy entity is different from a soldier defending his country. I used to be a peacenik. September 11th cured me forever. The National Guard's presence was creepy b/c it was so abnormal but thank God for them. We need a defense.

The first responders and paramilitary saved thousands of lives and brought reassurance to the survivors. When everyone else ran for dear life, they entered the WTC knowing the risks. They could have said it was too dangerous and everyone for themselves. Soldiers do the same thing.

Now I take out my frustrations through politcal action and blame the people with discretion. Servicepeople perform humanitarian work, too.

Great to see another Navy member. I enlisted myself last October. I ship out to Basic June 6th. I'm in the AECF rate!

Son just recently got out of the Coast Guard, six years.

The right move for someone who was born in the cult.
