I noticed on the installation instructions:

"Close ALL other programs, INCLUDING ANTIVIRUS programs."

I am not a computer whizzkid, but I have never installed software that told me to close antivirus.

What are they putting on our hard drives that they dont want us to know about?

    Am I being paranoid?

"Close ALL other programs, INCLUDING ANTIVIRUS programs."

Actually, this is very typical. The fewer programs running, the less likely a conflict will occur during installation. No conspiracy.

    Never shut down your anti-Virus..

You need it to check out the program your installing....

    My Norton checks everything..

That is what I thought antivirus was for, to check what you are putting on the computer. Are we just meant to trust the Slave on this like on everything else?

OUTLAW: Many, many legitimate software installations encourage the user to shut down the antivirus software during installation. (Your advice, however, is good advice.)

    Check this out: http://www.ehow.com/how_5192847_disable-antivirus-protection-install-software.html

Notice, that you can scan the application you're going to install, BEFORE you install it.

If your anti-malware program blocks or otherwise interferes with a program installation you may end up with a failed install. Or worse, something that looks like a "successful" install that doesn't really work.

Hence almost all software installation programs now recommend that you turn off your anti-malware scanners before the install to avoid any of these "false positives" that might cause a problem with the installation.

And to be clear, whether they explicitly say it or not, they mean turn it off for the duration of the installation process. In other words, be sure to turn it back on when the installation is complete, or you'll be running unprotected from then on.

And that can lead to other problems.

At home and at my workplace (where we have ca. 3500 computers), we NEVER turn out the Antivirus program. And "never" means "never". In so many years, the ONLY programs that could not be installed due running Antivirus software were viruses.

I have found other software (like iTunes) much more likely to prevent successfull installations.

It got my propaganda detector in my system tray going haywire and restarted my computer!
