Not exactly scientific (unless you happen to be a botanist) but a hoax presented by a reputable, respectable, current affairs programme which managed to fool the majority of Britain at the time it was broadcast...

Excellent post mummatron! Humans are VERY EASILY fooled. That is a fact that we might as well accept, and dare I say... laugh at.

In 18th-century England, Mary Toft convinced doctors she had given birth to 16 rabbits.

A Short Narrative of an Extraordinary Delivery of Rabbets [sic] was written by King George's surgeon about her case. People stopped serving rabbit stew.

Once the hoax was discovered, the medical community suffered great embarrassment...to put it mildly.

Mary Toft's hoax happened in 1726, during the reign of King George I. Mrs. Toft had inserted the parts of several rabbits where no rabbit parts should ever be and summoned the local surgeon, John Howard. She feigned delivery and the astonished Howard was convinced he'd participated in a medical oddity worthy of widespread notification.

Eventually, King George sent his surgeon, Nathanael St. Andre, and Samuel Molyneux, an astronomer and secretary to the Prince of Wales, to investigate. In their interview with Mrs. Toft, she told them that before her misadventure with rabbit births she had had a strong craving for rabbit meat, she often dreamed of rabbits, and spent much time trying to catch them in the garden.

If the King's doctor says it's true, then by golly it must be.

    My all-time favourite deception/hoax:

    The Cottingley Fairies

    Cottingley Fairies

In 1917, 2 young girls, Frances Griffiths & Elsie Wright faked fairy photographs using tissue paper and hatpins, whilst fooling around with Elsie's father's camera. They fooled renowned photographer, Harold Snelling, Sir Arthur Conan-Doyle and KODAK! In 1920 The Strand magazine published an article entitled "An Epoch Making Event - Fairies Photographed".

Sometimes we want to believe what we see/read.

In 1999 National Geographic magazine published articles heralding Archaeoraptor as the long awaited (and desperately needed) missing link between dinosaurs and birds. The primary article was entitled: “Feathers for T. rex?” But, in March of 2000 National Geographic reluctantly published the truth about this “fossil.” It was proven by CT scans to be a lizard’s tail glued onto a bird’s body.

As much as we hate to admit it, Humans have little defense against deception from a capable source. God warned us about this because he loves us. He wants us to believe him above all others:

?"...in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons...." 1 Timothy 4:1

"The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders, and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie, that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness." 2 Thessalonians 2: 9-12

"...when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?" Luke 18:21

"For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect." Matthew 24:25

...do not be conformed to this world...." Romans 12:2

"For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. But you be watchful in all things..." 2 Timothy 4:2-5

"...they will deliver you up to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations for My name’s sake. And then many will be offended, will betray one another, and will hate one another. Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many. " Matthew 24:9-11

"...Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution. But evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived. But you must continue in the things which you have learned...." 2 Timothy 3:1-5, 12-14

"I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, ?which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ." Galatians 1:6-7

Jesus said to them: "Take heed that no one deceives you. ." Matthew 24:4-5

As much as we hate to admit it, Humans have little defense against deception from a capable source. God warned us about this

because he loves us. He wants us to believe him above all others:

    Yup. Knew this was comming.

"See, its easy for humans to be fooled. Therefore, Science can never be trusted, and you should just beleive in my god!"

    Holy logical fallacies Batman!

Yes, humans can be fooled. But we DO have the ability to defend ourselves from deception. (Or do fall for every scam email that lands in your inbox, Perry? Are you that helpless and gulible?) That is why it is very important to verify references, look at physical evidence, and build a strong mental filter against unverified claims.

Every single example you have posted was eventually exposed by humans - humans who took a closer look at the evidence. Not a single one of the above hoaxes was exposed by your god. God is useless here. So why even bother bringing him up? He's not even relevant to the conversation at hand. He is a non-player.

Is it beyond your imagination that god is just another hoax perpetuated by a "capable source" (powerful religious people who have been utilizing fear, false hope, ignorance, and bad circumstance to manipulate and control people for thousands of years)?
