Well, the Hindu thing is easy enough to explain, I think. India has been exporting some of their best talent for a while now. The afflictions of black Americans are well-known. It would be interesting to see a model of predicted income holding race and other facors constant. But it's a tough question, since religion is largely an endogenous choice.

Jews have long had a rep for working hard, and the skilled Hindus that escape India have a drive to get away from that poverty. Black communities are poor, and history has some influence, but I think it's more complex - I think the Hindus often studied before they came to the USA, and the Jews have money to pay for kids to study, but poor communities don't.

Governing Body just wants people to peach. Education is a distraction from that, takes up time, costs money, etc..

Religious people in GENERAL are less wealthy than their atheist counterparts. That doesn't mean there are no rich Catholics or poor atheists but religious people generally give out money to be at church (gas, time, tithing, donations) and are less educated (beyond High School) while the more educated portion of society doesn't believe in God thanks to their education and are more balanced in where they put their money (instead of giving directly, some make investments with the proceeds going to not-for-profits, most are simply more careful in giving their money away without any research)

If you ask Jehovah's Witnesses the standard interview question: "Where do you see yourself in 5 years?" The answer, is always the same: "On the other side of Armageddon living on a Paradise earth."

This detachment from reality hits them very hard in the PREPAREDNESS for REALITY part of life!

Since Armageddon never comes and there is always tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow.....

JW's grow older and poorer and their strategy for old age or emergencies doesn't apply to real world practicalities!

Clinically, being deluded about reality is a dysfunctional disability.

Also many Witnesses go into debt because of their warped view on money. If one believes that the end is nigh then money, within their minds, loses a lot of it's intrinsic value. Many Witnesses manage money like children would.

Interesting, I wonder what the mormons look like. They're similar to JWs, but do they discourage higher ed?

What you said is so true. The couple I made friends with at Bethel and are now both pioneering have told me that. Why worry about being in debt as the system is going to end soon so rack up those credit cards. They actually looked at me like was spiritually week when I questioned them about it.

It would be more useful if the survey differentiated b/w Hindus that emmigrated and those born in the US. Those that come to this country are often wealthier to begin with, so that might skew results, even when it comes to 2nd generation kids. As far as LDS, they encourage education--heck, they even have their own University (Brigham Young).

I'm surprised that the college degree rate is as high as it is among JWs, according to that survey. I would have put it at 3-4% for an undergrad degree and around 1% for anything beyond.
