If polygamy were not considered immoral(not according to the Bible) and illegal in the states, then it would not be an issue -divorcing someone you had loved and cared for and who likewise spent their life loving and caring for you would not be the only alternative to immorality. Of course, our laws in the US don't give much leeway in this area. For those who claim to believe in the bible, to reject polygamy and embrace divorce in this circumstance seems the immoral choice, but that is just my opinion. We have a very stratified society and thinking outside the box is discouraged and even vilified.
