I think that Constantine's combination of military conquest and church unity imposed a different kind of Christianity. Pagels said that scholars always knew some group was in opposition to Paul b/c of statements he makes. What I find interesting is that more scrolls have been found in modern times. I wonder what is still in the desert that an Indiana Jones might unearth. One thing that struck me, reading the Gnostics, was how the sayings of Jesus are so similar but the interpretation of the meaning is radically different.
I wish we knew more about the Jerusalem group.
